The statement ch.irsed that more than a year ago an unnamed mem ber of a rommitteft seeking to re peal the law urped Mm to acquiesce and bluntly informed him. "we ruined Postmaster General Hitch cock: Jttid destroyed Mr. Hitchcock and destroyed Mr. Taft.M Later, it said, a well known publisher, also unnamed, promised that Mr. Hurle Fon would be made the most popular man in the cabinet if ho would aid or acquiesce in the repeal and said 'but if you do not, I fear they will ruin you." IJiirlofon Spurn Offer;. These offers were spurned, Mr. Burleson declared, and now he said he was confronted by a systematic propaganda of selfish interests who through repeal of the law would be able to "resume enjoyment of a postal subsidy of over $70,000,000 per annum." Kven under the zone law. he add ed, there still would be un annual loss of more than ."00,000,000 to be made up out of the peneral public. This statement followed one given out at the postollice department dur ing the day announcing that the postmaster penerat had directed that telegraph systems suspend their reg ulations asainst transmission of li belous matter, as far as the matter relating to the postmaster general was concerned. This order was giv en, it was stated yesterday after the night manager of the postal system nt New York had refused to accept certain messages filed by the New York World news bureau on the ground that they were libelous.
