Hickory limb might Lo very much in favor, yet not in the cyo of a Mishawaka mother who thus far has decline! to permit her daughter upon the great Atlantic City soa-board. Like mothers of old, however, the present day mother Is forbidding her daughter to "go noir the water." And if daughter goes well, that, until Sunday, was the fecret. N'ow it is the cause of violent disapproval and condemna tion of the present city administra tion. A Mutter of HoanK It's a matter of boards to Misha waka missing board, and while ad mirers of attractive bathing suits and lovers of bathing think things of horror about the city officials, the whereabouts of the essential part3 of the ehelter house, UFed In past years as a dressing room for the fairer sex, doesn't worry them. What they want 13 immediate quarters. Service is the missing word from the fa vored menu. Bathing suits may take the place of parasols on the beach. Last Sun- ! day sot a new stylo In MishaA-aka. I Bathing suits, or moet of them, are being carried not worn. Mlshawa ka's fairer sex don't believe in 1 wearing them. And there's a rea son. Youthful vandals or maybe older (andal3 so far as ago is concerned ' apparently had evil in mind when boards were removed from cho'ce positions in the shelterhouse-dress-ing room. The openings terve as unscreened windows, and permit tho world to look in if the world should happen to be rolling by. Mod esty has perched itsolf upon the shoulders of the dainty misses, and rather than subject themselves to the ever eager eyes of watching males well, bathing suits are being carried In Mishawaka; they aren't being worn. Shall They "Wear 'Km In Street? While fate'a untimely hands have marred the pleasures of many would-be bathers', others who by chance live within a stone's throw of the beach have little competition for bathing room. It might be look ed upon as shocking to see fair maidens walking calmly from their homo to tho beach, attired In bath ing costumes but it isn't. But everyone In Mishawaka doesn't live within a stone's throw of the beach. J Yet even those who live so close have joined their neighbor citizens in the cry for a woman's dressing room. And all may keep on crying Mishawaka's city officials seem ingly aren't putting out a thing. Publicity was solicited by many of tho city's younger set and older set, too to bring the sad state of affairs to the eyes of the park of ficials. Perhaps it has a few of them havo been known to read South Bend's leading newspaper. "We visited tho beach last Sun day expecting to wim," a dainty little maid said sarcastically, "on'.fy to find that several boards of the shelter houso wero missing. We found tho place about as privato as tho rolls on election day." This much was said, though much was hidden beneath Vhe reddened face of the little Irish rose that might have caused tho park officials to buy a score of electric fans and a carload of ico to offset the rise in tempera ture, had by chance the verbal shower been bestowed upon them. Park Faces Desertion. "Blue laws" haven't held much ef fect upon the little city. But a Mishawaka Sunday in the future plans to be as quiet as a machine shop on a holiday unless the wants of Mishawaka pleasure seekers are met. Centuries have passed since the days of Hve and all the world has become more populated. Women have a sense of pride and all haven't become hardened to the Intoxication of fast life. So women and bathing suits probably will find pleasure in tho waters of nearby lakes, or dis tant ones, and Merrifield park may become quiet, an echo of a winter day, all because park officials have the epring fever, have lost their pleasure or interest in the few hours of pleasure that others might enjoy were the opportunity afforded or maybe just because they simply don't give a rap. And, too, the money that might fill the compartments of various cash drawers in the city that money which must bo spent and which is welcomed by all who cry out their wares, may be found swelling the coffers of transportation lines, ho tels, restaurants, cafis and what not of summer reports. Necessary repairs could be made to the present shelter hou?e at a very small expense a shelter house that would become stictly private, and a stumbling" stono or an ob stacle in tho path of evil minde. Complaint is also made against tho disgraceful condition of the ap proaches to the beach which make it almost impossible for children to ap proach tho edge of the water with out havlnu' their feet lacerated with old tin cans, and other rubbish. Many novelties have been introduced by him. little twists that keep the audience In a constant uproar because of their cleverness and unexpectedness. The settings are those of the Orient, with many of the scenes laid in a Sultan's harem. A domestic tragedy, resulting from the clash of ambitions of husband and wife. Is unfolded in the William Farnum picture, "His Greatest Sac rifice." which Is the feature at tho Temple Tuesday and Wednesday. LINCOLN' TIIIIVTER, Thomas Mtighan will appear at tho Lincoln theater today and to morrow in "Civilian Clothes." The story shows haw many a frlrl has discovered that a fellow who looked like a Beau Brummel in a Khaki uniform Is quite an ordinary look ing person now that he has doffed his O. D.'s for "civics." Man in the Street Anyway, we arc glad that Am bassador Harvey was considerate enough to refrain from saying that wo wnt into the war to indulge a natural lust for blood and loot. Winchester, Ky., has a woman's club to do patching for "bachelors. Theso ladies are probably not aware cf the fact that It's the married men, not tho bachelors, who need the most patches. The woman bandit says she found smiles and tears more effective than a gun in taking money from men. Kvery married man knows all about it. A Boston psychologist says the dance is an expression of love and rhythm and is one of the few natur al pleasures left. Isn't it a pity that plowing -wasn't invested with some thing attractive that way? Or is the way folks sidestep it a form of dancing and an expression of love and rythm? "A serious crisis Is threatening tho textile industry," says one writer. It looks that way to us. Just a step or two further and the fig orchardists will own a clothing monopoly. For one brief hour the other day, Chicago was governed with entire honesty and more than usual In telligence. Every city official for a brief hour was replaced by a Boy Scout. If Adam had never undergone that rib operation which marked the introduction of anaesthesia in surgery, by the way the human leg would never have attracted the at tention in this world that it has. Most of our business trouble is sockdological, not psychological, as some folks say. There Is one unhappy thing about the board of trade manipulators in Chicago, viz., no matter how we pro vincials groan and lio about our crop production, -we can't fcol them a particle. They know tho truth and s-oak us good and hard. A writer contends that a man should be absolutely just with his wife in financial matters. It wouldn't do. Wives wouldn't stand any such treatment. The only sensible plan Ls to withhold information of the last raise and let them think they are getting all. If our foreign policy keeps on de veloping as now, the first chuckle we hear emanating from Washington wo intend to guess as Woodrow Wilson's. A legless calf was accidentally killed near Bremen a day or two ago. It is just as well. A calf with out legs could have no chance in the world. Calflcss legs aro almost just as hopeless. As a rule, however, the reformer 13 very apt to overlook himself. Nature Is no respecter of persons, either. When sho distributes fem inine beauty she never stops to ask how much .money a girl's father has. The fowers that bloom in the spring, tra-la, have nothing on the June roses blooming In the gardens of George B. William?.
