t .1 '1 1 1 i i i 4 "J i I YOU SELL VAULE OF SMALL TRACTS WHEN PROPERLY CULTI VATED IS TOLD BY EARL MORRISON LIFE IN OKLAHOMA Hot? The Republican- Is Appre ciated by Former Resi dents Now In Distant State. Editor of the Republican: My father, "W. B. Morrison, was a subscriber to the Chronicle. The first isue of the new pi-per reached us on Saturday morn in jr; its ap pearance was that of a bii eity dailv, but tilled every inch with good sub stantial reaching matter, concerning the Marshall County peoples, towns und rural districts. We were always irlad to jret the Chronicle, although sometimes rather late. It reached us in Indiana Territory. Colorado. Oregon, and several points in Cali fornia. Because the patrons of a paper are quitt and never send in good words of praise is on reason" for the editor to feel that his paper is not appreciated. Many pleased reader are like those who would like to talk in the testimonial meeting the spirit is there, but the words are lacking. And now, comes the "Republican, regenerated, many times since 1851. I have just reread the old Mar shall County History published in 1881, very hürhly prized by my mother and also my grandfather, John Jacoby. now in the Beyond. I find that the first paper published in Plymouth was about the middle of the 19th century, under the name of " Pilot,' ' then Banner, the Mar shall county Republican, each bear ing its burdens under the manage ment of able newspaper men, some of whom have long since passed over. Next was the Phmouth Repub lican since 187S under John iW. Seiders, and from 1879 with Ed S. Brooke and later in 1901 seemingly -passed into the realm of the firgot ten. But now it is born again. The doings of the Marshall count) people are of importance, and of in-. terest to Marshall county people il every part of the United . States, :anny and navy foreign countries .and in civilized heathen lands. The farm experiments tests speech es, sermon, etc., can and are well made into a part of some other state. The address of Mr. Chas. Heim at the Farmer's Institute is not only applicable for that immediate vicinity Abut to everyplace, where agriculture is followed. As regard. the small farm, there pre many of them in, Oklahoma. We live on a five acre tract, in a -live sere neighborhood. I know of fam ilies that get their living and educate their children on these small acre ages with but very little outside helps, now and then an occasicnal chance to rent tome other five acre. It would seerr strange in this new state with a eres and acres of virjrin prairies, that so many should confine themselves to so small a tract. It is like this, in n,ost of the towns or cities of the state the idea was speculation. Everything would be ?vorth more a little later on so all around the corporate limits, except minor Indian lands, was platted into tracts which would sell to the best advantage, that being the five, six . and ten aere lots, sold at a profit and nearer in reach of the small man - that wanted to get rich, and yet not be out of a home and a chance of 'sustenance on account. of not invest ing his Miiall amount where it would be a quick turn. As a result, the outlying districts are improved into jrarden nts, the schools are more than full. M.d plenty of people to ill all the churches. Th fane is true of. California -near the cities where I have observed for myself. One advantagt here is the mild climate, a saving of fuel, which might be an item to figure into the - small farm proposition, but coal ..costs about the same everywhere. I would say, no matter how small your farm in Marshall county, don't sell it for the chance of getting "one some where else. That "little spot will amply produce if properly turn ed to the right crops, besides being a home. -Oklahoma is now getting a long wanted rain. - My t mother left yetterday for Colorado Springs to be with - my brother Hos3, who has been ill foi nearly two years, with probably tuberculosis or " bugs" as most of the "lungers" call it. .He has beca DO THE Kill C011Y FftRl at different Sanitariums and under Specialts care; it seems that this is the result left from typhoid fever, which probably settled in the liver or spleen and later caused the lunjrs to be infected. Since last June un til November the case responded to the climatic cure, but during the winter he has had to try something else. For two months he has taken medicated oxygen by inhalation, which pets rid of the bacilli and heals the diseased areas without incapsulatinjr as does the climate cure to break out again at another time. He says that he is Improving under this treatment.. Very Truly, Earl B. Morrison, Shawnee, Oklahoma Pottawatonie Count v. Notice. All persons owing U3 are request ed to settle the same at once, and all having bill? against U3 will please bring them in; -al?o, those having our sacks please return tbem immediately. - d26-l; w2-9 Ball & Bankert. Indianapolis, Jan. 26. The Senate committee on education lias acted on the school inspection bill intro duced by Senator Milton T. McCary, of Frankfort, and has amended the measure so as to make its provisions optional instead of compulsory'. The way is opened for the adop tion of the plan of school inspec tion by school corporations that fa. vor it. The bill is based upon th fact that 40 per cent of the school children examined are said to be af- flcted with defects or disease whieh reduce their efficiency, whieh it k claimed could be reduced or eradi cated 03 the employment of medi cal inspection. By medical inspetion of school children is meant that thev shall havt their si:ht and hearing tested and be examined for the pfesenct of disease, disabilities, decayed teeth and other defects which may reduce the efficiency of the child. By the bill all school trustees may institute medical inspection in 1913 for the purpose of carrying out the rules which the measure provides art to be drafted by the state board of health and the state department of education. A school physician is to be ap pointed who shall make an examin ation of school children. On finding a child defective in any way it shall be his duty to inform the par ent and advise the family physician be consulted. In case the parents are not financially able to give the necessary aid it shall be the duty ot the physician to inform the township trustee who shall nrpvide such re lief. . "Two million of dollars are lost annually in the state of Indiana by defects and diseases of children in the public schools, all of which is the result of preventable causes. From the standpoint of economy the cost of school inspection would be a mere pittance and the experience of ther states shows that medical inspection does pay. "In Massachusetts it has been shown that school epidemics have been greatly reduced and the defec tive children that have been discov. ered are being helped.
