The following resume of the career of the late Biyard Taylor it from the Springfield Republican: "Mr. Taylor was born at the Pennsylvania village ot Kennelt Square, January 11, 1825, of parents of German descent and mo ieiate circumstances, and in a tborougbty Ameri can way proceeded to make himself of con sequence in the world. He became appren tice in a priniing office at 17, read all he could with a view to me. scraped together a little money and traveled all over Europe be tween 19 and 20, at Dot more tban $500 ex pense. W hen he got back he marketed his experiences in tbat bright book of travel en titled '-Views Afoot " It was his introduc tion to the New York Tribune, on whose staff he was engaged in 1847. and. has coo-, tlnoed ever siiice in ona capacity or another. The etory of nearly every trip he has ma le sincf and be has been all ovtr tbe world has been told first 'n tbe columns of the Tnbane. He went to Calitornia in the days of the Argonauts; be sailed up tbe Nile and as far into the inerlorof Africa as they went in 1851; In 1352 he crossed A-ia iuto Calcut ta, and tben joined Perry's expedition to Japan. Passing over 20 years constantly varied with travel, his most noted reevnt trips have been through Europe from Nor way to Egypt, and thence back and by way' of the Orkneys to Iceland to tbe millennial cslebration there, all in 1874 . This has been tbe special pursuit of a literary life, remark ably bu-y aud proline in quite other direc tions tban bis lucid and happy narrative of travel; for he has become an ' accomplished ?cho!ar, publisbed four novels, a d.ren or so books of vene (one of which Id jut fre ni the pre-) and translated "Faust," besides doing a vast quantity of nerspjper work and gea er-1 e liting. Mjrtover he was for a time tecretary of le:ation and then charge d'af faires at St Petersburg in - 18G2 3, and had but recently entered upo i the duties of United 8 ates miuisttr to Germany at the t:me ef his death. "Mr. Tbj lor was, as we negsn by sajing, a rerretentative American, in his alert and de cisive command of circumstances, his great and incessant industry and bis prso'iral and versatile talent. The r adness to do any thing and the aptness in doing everything which charactenz-d him aequjll'iea hardly consistent with greatness, aud Mr. Taylor wai not great, but be was in a good sense grandiose in bis best efljrti. Tne merit of his letters and books of travel consisted in an easy, unpretentious style, graphic and well proportioned cesciiption, and such tense of tbe pictnrefqae in landscape, adven ture and character of the essential humor of things as filled the tale wiih personal life and reality. His first novel, "Hannah Tnnrs too," remains his best, but it waa not in this field or by lesser work that be purposed to live in his country's literature. "H's aim was tbe highest to rank nobly as a poet. His first book of versa was pub lished in 1S44, and si ace then volumes of ballads, romances, lyrics, etc , have followed each other in frequent succession. Among these the "Diversions of the Echo Club" may be noted aa the most skillful and witty col lection of parodies, or rather imitations, ever published. Tbe most notable of his larger poems are "Tbe Masque of the Gods," "Lars, a Pastoral of Norway," "The Prophet A Tragedy," tbe translation of Goet tie's "Faust" (both parts) in the original meter, and his last and most ambitious book "Prince Deukslion," u but just placed be fore the public. Mr. Taylor's treatment of "Faust" . is masterly in its refine ment of sympathy with the author's ?reat intent, and is acknowledged ar tbe best translation that has been made of the world-poem; bis prefatory exposition of tbe occult meaning of the baf fling second part is one of the mot able critical studies id tbe language. In his principal original poems bis loftiness of con ception bat not (uuleta in ' Prince Deukali OQ," on which, we desire to pron uace no hasty judgment) been completely matched in execution, but it is much to have intend ed so highly. Mr. Taylor wss deeply Imbued witb the spirit of German letters, and has resided much in G rmany, where be mar ried. Since 1872 be has beeo engaged upon a biography of Goethe and Schiller, which milH hiva dtmmi an .rhtnitlo nnrlr.it of the men and their age had he lived 0 ompiete ir, as it waa ex pec ted bis nti-eiou in Of runny would give bim opportunity to do." To avoid imposition, purchasers of Wal- tham watches will observe that every genu- Icie watch, whether gold oreilver. beara our trade mark on both case and movement. Gold cas are stamped "A. W. Co." and guarantee certificates accompany them. Sil ver cases are s'amped "Am. Watch Co., Wal thani, Mata , Sterling Silver," and are accom panied by guarantee certificates, signed 1L E. Bobbins, Treasurer. The name "Wal thara" is plainly engraved upon all move ments, irrespective of other distinguishing marks. This caution is rendered necessary by rea son of the fact that our cases are frequently separated from our movements and put upon worthless movements of other makers, and vce versa, thus affecting injuriouely the performance of the watches and vitiating our guarantee, which is intended to cover only our complete watches wholly made by ni. It is nece ssiry also because it is bo no torious as to be a public scandal, that there Is great fraud in the metal quality of both go'd and silver cases aa now generally sold. Ve have demonstrated by f requ-nt aft-ay that many gold and bilver casts offered in the market are debussd from 10 to 20 per cent, from tbe quality tbey assume to be. This is a fraud Uori the purchaser, and ac counts for the low price at which such cased wa'ches have been sold. "Eighteen carat" gold, such aa the Waltham cases are made ot, is as nearly pure gold as can be made and be durable. It contains 750 1000 of pure gold and 250 1000 of alloy. Aa Artlrle that Will Make the lltltl and . tbe Gray Headed Kejalee- . Of all tbe compounds which the chemist's art has given to the world, for hundreds of years, for the purpose of restoring the balr to its natural growth and color, not one has been perfect. Many of the hair dressings of the diy are excellent, but the great ma.-s of tbe stuffs sold fir promoting tbe growth and bringing back the original color are mere humbugs, while not a few are positively pernicious in their effecs upon the scalp and tbe structure of the hair. All hair dyes are well known to cbeomisas more or hsi po;sonons, because the charge in color is or tiheial, and does not depend upon a restora tion of the functions of the ecalp to their natural health and vigor. The falling Out of the hair, the accumulation of dandruff and the premature cnat-ge in color ere all evidences of a dis?as-d condition of tbe fcalp and the glands which nourish the hair To arrest the-a cau-es tbe article used mmt posi-esi medical as well as chemical virtues, and the change must betn under the scalp to be of permanent and beting benefit. Snch an article has been discovered, and like many other wonderful discoverie it 11 found to consisted elements almost in their na'or al ttate. Petroleum oil is the article which is mde to work such extraordinary re-uits; but it is after the b st rrtiued article has bn-n chemically treated and completely de odoriz d, tbat it is in prop' condition for tbe u i et. It was in far-idf Russia that the eftVcts of petroleum upoa tb hair were first observed. A government officer having no ticed that a partially bald-hetded servant of his, when trimming tbe lam t s, had a habit of wiping bis oil-bes&eare 1 hand in his scanty lo.ks, and the resilt waa, iu a few months, a much finer head of black, glos-y air than he ev.r bad be'ore. Th o-l wa tried on horses and cattle that had lost t lr liiir fr.m the ot le plague, and the results aere as rapid as they were marvelous. Tne naneg, and even the tails of horses, which had fallen out, were completely restored in a few weeks. These experiments were her alded to the world, but tbe knowledge was prac Ically useless to tbe prematurely bald and trray, as no one in the civilized society could tolerate the use of refined petroleum as a dre.sin for the hair. But the skill of one of our chemists has overcome tbe diffi culty, and by a process known only to him self be has. after very elaborate and costly experiments, succeeded in deodorizing re fined pe'roleam, whica renders it suscepti ble of being bandied as daintily as tbe fa ruous eau de cologne. Tne experiments with, tbe deodorized liquid on the humaa hair were attended with the most ss ooish ing results. A few applications where the hair was thin and falling, gave remarkable tone and vigor to the scalp and the hair, and tbe natural color began to app-ar almost from tbe first application. Every particle of dandruff disappears on the first or second dressing, and tbe liquid, so searching in its nature, seems to penetrate to tbe roots at once, and Bet up a radical change from the start It is well known that tbe mobt beau tiful colors are made from Petroleum, and by some mysterious operation of nature the use of this article grsdually Imparts a beau tiful ligot brown color to the hair, which, by continued use. deepens to a black. The color remains permanent for an indefinite length of time, and tbe change is so gradual that the moct Intimate friends can scarcely detect its progress. In a word, it is the most wonderful discovery of the age, and well calculated to make the prematurely bald and gray rejoice.
