Baptists Have Gathering In Rio Grande RIO GRANDE CITY. Feb. 9 —The W. M. 8. of the Pint Baptist church gave a Royal Service program led by Mrs. W. O. 8cott. at the church Monday afternoon. Those present were Mrs. H. M. Jones of Roma. Me&dames Alton Beadle. C. D. Mos teller, Lee Cartwright. H. H. Tid more. J. 8. Howard, M de Ferrier. Morris Shuford. J. W. Wolters. How ard Bass. T. F. Stone. W. E. Ellison. E. C. Carter and Rev. Ernest Kelley. • • • The Woman’s club of Rio Grande City sponsored a book review and tea at the home of Mrs Florence J. Scott Sunday afternoon, for the pur pose of raising funds for the Fed eration club house at Austin. A very fine review of ‘ Joseph and His Brothers” by Thomas Mann was given by Mrs. J. C. Jones of Edin burg. who was introduced by Mrs. Scott after welcome to the guests l ad been extended by Mrs. Arnold Yale, president of the club. Tea was served later with Mrs. R. E. Wil loughby of Fort Ringgold and Mrs. H. C. Baker pouring • • • The Junior Diversity club was en tertained Tuesday evening by Mrs. J. W. Rutledge and Mrs. J. J Guerra at the home of the former, those present including Mesdames F. D. Guerra. Y. Sanches Jr.. Alfred Leal. John Hinojosa Jr., Arnold Vale. Kathryn Isaguirre. W. C Morris. Misses 8ue Oalloway. Stella Margo and LaReita Smith, and Mrs Gor don Langston, who has been made a member of the club recently. Alter business had been transacted several rounds of contract were played, in which awards were presented to Miss Margo and Mrs Leal, and a salad course was served by the host esses. Mrs. A. Sligler of the State Department of Education was the leading speaker. Miss Katherine Henderson of Austin, deputy state superintendent of the Texas State Department of Education, visited the local schools Wednesday, and was the house guest of Superintendent and Mrs. H. C. Baker, going on from here to La redo for the convention. Mr* Ida E. Huff and Mrs. Sarah E. Johnson motored to McAllen Monday. Dan Shuford spent Sunday with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Hudson was a gracious hostess Thursday afternoon when the mem bers of the Silk Stocking club and several guests met in her home. Val entine motifs marked the accessories for the affair. When scores were counted Mrs. J. L. Bates was presented with the award for success among the club members and Mrs. Charles Ludden I was the recipient of the trophy | among the guests. Amusing apple bobbing contests were enjoyed as well as a (peanut hunt in which winners for the largest number found were Cookie Aldrich and Billie Lamm. The large birthday cake w*as deck ed with a circus parade and topped with a canvass tent. The interest ing confection was cut and served with milk chocolate. In the late afternoon tempting lemon pie was served with whipped cream and coffee. Sixteen members were present. The next meeting of the club will be held m the home of Mrs. Arthur Graves. • • ■ A delightful Valentine party was given Wednesday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs. E. A. Oliver, who reside in Los Fresnos. Mem. ‘ bers of the Learner's club were host esses for the affair honoring their husbands. Clever biographies, written by Mrs. Elmer Morris were read and child hood pictures presented of each member, which proved to be a very , interesting guessing contest. Oliver. • • • Mrs. Mabel Thomason, deputy grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star made her official visit to the San Benito chapter Monday evening. The chapter room was ef fectively decorated with red berries placed in tall baskets and interming led with fern The same lovely sprays of red pepper bush were used about the banquet room where de licious apple pie was served with coffee following the meeting. Following the initiatory work. Mrs. Thomason conducted a most in structive drill on the work of the order. BeiTV* closing the meeting the visitor was presented with a pretty piece of pottery as a gift from San Benito chapter. Forty members and visitors were present for the interesting session. • • • The personnel of the San Benito J. C. Penney Company store was pleasantly entertained in the home of the local manager and his wnfe. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. W’arburton. when the group enjoyed a waffle supper consisting of crisp bacon, sausages, tea and coffee. Following the delicious supper the evening was spent discussing prob lems and business methods in the community. The Pour Corners Bridge club spent an enjoyable evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Phip penny when an extra table of guests were present. M., which will be given Friday evening. Feb. 22. in the local Masonic Tem ple. Elaborate plans have been completed for the occasion and fam ilies of Masons are cordially invited to attend. • • Members of the Wednesday Ev en ing Dinner Bridge club were enter tained at the Aztec for the dinner hour, later repairing to the home of Mrs. W. B. Hinkley for the games of bridge Six tables of players were grouped in the attractively arranged rooms. When scores had been counted Mrs. W. J. Vinsant and E. E. Ogden received the success trophies. Quests for the evening included Mr. and Mra M. B. Huffman. • • • Miss Thelma Copeland was hostess to the members of the Wednesday Evening club at her home when games of bridge were enjoyed. Awards in the series of games were presented to Mrs. Kidd and Mrs. Jack King. A tempting luncheon course was served in the late »*’£ ing. Those plafng were Mesdames Arthur Lee. At a meeting of the board of di rectors of the Germania club held Monday in the offices of Dr. Pollard, plans were completed for the meet ing to be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Germania club house, when a "new deal" for 1935 will be explained. A basket lunch will be served at 1 p. m. and all who desire may attend. The following list of officers will serve the club during the coming year: president, T. J. Rommer; vice president, J. A. Three tables of players assembled for the games. Two guests. Mrs R. B. Stewart and Mrs. H. B Livingston were present. Yellow flowers and sprays of yel low- berries provided interesting floral adornment Tallies and other accessories depicted the soft tones of yellow. When scores were counted Mrs. W. J. The next meeting of the club will be held in the home of Mrs. Smith. • • • El Jueves Contract Bridge club was delightfully entertained in the home of Mrs Melvin Gilbert. Red begonias provided an effective background for the affair. Tallies and other ap pointments carried out a Valentine I theme. Three tables of players enjoyed the hospitality. Mrs. Charles Green was a guest for the afternoon. Follow ing the games a salad course was served. Gifts were presented to Mrs. Charles Green and to Mrs. Hilary Hicks. Each gift was wrapped in white tissue and tied with red rib bons. The next meeting of the club will be held in the hone of Mrs. John Mealing. • • • Mrs Harry Foehner returned Fri day morning from Houston where she went in company with her mo ther. Mrs. W. E Anderson, who will undergo an operation on her eye in the near future. Mrs. P. R. Foley has returned to San Benito after an absence of sev eral months spent in Indianapolis, her former home. Mrs W C Longmire, who has been attending the Academy of Beauty Science in San Antonio was called home during the first of the week by the serious illness of her mother. Mrs. J. W. Davis. The condition of Mrs. Davis is now considerably im proved. Mrs. Elmer Morris and Mrs. J. P. Glenn have returned from a trip to Dallas. Mrs. J. L. Landrum of this city is the guest of her sister. Mrs. S. Dean Wa^on in Houston. Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Noyes have been in the Valley for the past few days where Mr. Noyes is attending to busi ness connected with the Internation al Boundary- Commission. Mr. and Mrs. Luke A Barber and children, and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Ky ser have departed for their homes in Dallas and Houston after attend ing the funeral of their mother, Mrs. A. C. Kyser. who died suddenly this past week. Mr. and Mrs W. P. Smith have had as their guest their nephew. Then on Smith of Houston. Mr. Smith formerly resided in San Be nito. He is now connected with the Radio Station KPRC in Houston He was accompanied to the Valley by Mrs. Howard Smith and little son. Smton. Mrs. T. D. Mrs. Ford Lockett Is Hostess to the Thursday Bridge Mrs. Ford Lockett was hostess to members of the Thursday Bridge club this week at her home. During the games of bridge Mrs. Ralph Desmond was high, with Mrs Owen Reilly second high Mrs. C. K. Crowe and Mrs. Ralph Desmond were substitute players for the afternoon. Donald, and Miss Iris Volz were hostesses at the home of Mrs. Robertson for the Junior Tuesday club's guest day tea Tuesday after noon. Mrs. M. Day Young, Valley Fed eration chairman of Junior clubs gave a talk on Junior clubs’ work in the Valley. Mrs. Tom Sammons. Jr., sang "By a Bend of the River,'* by Clara Edwards, and was accom paned by Mrs. Sid L. Hardin at the piano. Mrs. John Ferrell, Jr., reviewed the ten thousand dollar Atlantic prize novel, "Dusk at the Grove.” by Samuel Rogers, and Mrs. Carl Roet tele gave the biography of the au thor and a criticism of the book. ‘To a Wild Rose," by MacDowell, was given as a violin solo by Mrs. Donald with Mrs. Hugh Proctor playing the piano accompaniment. Guests were received by the host esses. and Miss Volz, dressed in white crepe with red velvet trimmings, had charge of the registration book which was a huge red cellophane heart with white leaves outlined with paper lace. The red bow at the top of the book bore the inscription in gold, "Junior Tuesday Club Guest Day. 1935" Dainty refreshments in a Valentine theme were served from a lace laid table with silver appointments. A heart of pansies and fern formed the center and this was flanked by tall red burning candles in silver can delabras, and candles in silver hold ers burned on the buffet. Mrs. So Relle and Mrs. Lauder presided at the table. • • • Mrs. A. J. Whittlesey used potted plants and lavender for her floral decorations, and carried out a color scheme of lavender and pink in her party accessories when she was hostess to the Neighborhood Bridge club Wednesday afternoon. During a short business session Mrs. T. W. Nethery was elected cor responding secretary to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the office by Mrs. Leon H. Brown. Mrs. T. H. Armstrong gave a re view of the “Life of Empress Jose phine” by Mulhbach, and Mrs. W. G. Close gave the biography of the writer and a criticism of the book. This was Di Sheldon's final les son for this class and the wives were invited as guests for the social hour which followed the lecture.
