Lukas has added another film performance to his record. Deviating from the usual murder mystery. Director Edwin Marin has contributed a picture that is sug gestive of that other perfect mys tery picture, “The Thin Man," a fast-moving plot with sparkling dia logue. no lagging scenes and a fair sprinkling of wholesome humor. Lukas is assisted in his detective work by a new leading lady for the screen — Rosalind Russell, a prom inent recruit from the Broadway stage who has only been in pictures for a short time. The baffling plot deals with the eccentric Llewellyn family. One member is murdered, another dies mysteriously and two others are strangely poisoned although they re cover. It befalls Lukas, as Philo Vance, to discover the guilty poison er and. naturally, to cast suspicion on everyone. Unusual in Itself, one of science’s latest discoveries, "heavy water," figures prominently in the plot. When she slips oat, and her escape coincides with three other murders, he proceeds to unravel the mystery, getting himself, incidentally, at the William Frawley, Fred MacMurray and Ann Sheridan in one o fthe lighter momenta of Paramount’s roaring adventure drama, “Car 99“ showing Sunday and Monday at the Queen Theatre, Brownsville. CAGNEY TAKES ROLE OF FEDERAL ACE The leap from gangster to copper would not appear such a long Jump for some players, but the last person one would expect to succumb to the cause of law and order is Jimmy Cagney. Nevertheless, the one and only Cagney, tough guy of the movies, has turned Federal sleuth in the First National production “O Men” showing Friday and Saturday at the Capitol, Brownsville, in which, as a member of the United States department of Justice, he tracks down and eliminates the very type of character he has so often portray ed. Cagney Is still the tough guy — tojgher even than he has ever been before. Gregory Rogers, author of **G Men.” built his story around the headlines that have been chasing one another across the front pages of American newspapers for the last two or three years. He was in spire! by the heroic deeds of the G Men — the government men who have knocked the very foundations cut fom under gangdom — and he gave the title “Cl Men" to hit scen ario.
