Herald Want Ads do Big Jobs for Little Money—Use Them and Profit INFLATION AHEAD! i Continued from Pi|« Oat) th* thing to do to meet the sort of commodity pnce trend Indicated by 3i4p 4',;m merles of opinion. For most people the time for buying commodities u ■ hedge against inflation and a general prioe rise ended about Jan. SI, 1931 when the dollar was formally devalued. Nimble people put their money into commodities early in 1933, made excellent profits, and recently have been switching their funds Into other Investments. Commodity trading is for specialists, speculators, and those who know the various trades. It is not for ordinary people, untrained In the intricacies of the commodity markets. Our budget of expectations does not show s rise of general com modity prices beyond 60% above present levels. And even that rise does not appear so oertain as the rise of 1933 to 1934 appeared. The prospect is not enough to warrant most peopls in making s 4 to • year commitment in commodities. Remember also that stored commodities earn nothing, yield no income. The purchaser foregoes interest on money invested, and hs pays rather stiff charges for storage, Insurance, other carrying charges. SO — for moat people commodities are not the beet medium . for protection against the Inflation which is ahead. The importance of specialised knowledge of commodities Is em phasized by the record of what different commodities have done. Note now they vary, both among themeelves. and In relation to the average. There is statistical basis for aaauminf that commodities are apt to move relatively slowly In the next period of busi ness improvement. World commodity stocks, indicated by statistics for 8 leading international commodities, are about twice as large as they were in the period of 1923-24-25. Lower production cast*. Another factor over the long pull Is the constant Improvement in productive proceeees making for efficiency, low er production coats, to maet the Irrepressible forces of competition for the consumer s dollar Of course, a business boom calls for larger supplies of raw ma terials. Manulacturwg efficiency may expand volume of such materials, thus offsetting some of the influences which normally tend to hold com modity prices down Despite the general observation that commodity cemmUmonte are wot suitable for heating the particular inflationary period ahoad. you Vftouid keep commodity minded. It 1* important to remember that the rend of commodity prices is up. even thought slowly. . Investments In businesses Involving large commodity inventories have added attraction m a time of rising prices. A great part of the huge corporate losses recorded in 1981 and 1932 ware due to write-downs of Inventory. In the years immediately ahead, many corporations will show improved positions because of increased Inventory valuations. (CONTINUED THURSDAY) (Copyright. 1935, by United Features Syndicate. Inc.)
