Marriage Of Valley Pair Solemnized ! (Special to The Herald > McALLEN, May 28.—A wedding Of much interest to many Valley i friends was solemnised Friday night 1 when Miss Marguerite Gibbs and Mr. Clarence C. McDaniel, Jr., were united in marriage at the home o1 Mrs. Bess A. McDaniel in McAllen. The Rev. Dr. J. W. Gates, grand father of the groom, performed the ceremony and the wedding ring which was worn by the late Mrs. Gates, the groom's grandmother, added fitting tradition to the mar riage. Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel left Sat uidiy night for Monterrey, Mexico, where they will enjoy a brief wed u~*g ki ip a at- couple will be at home ' in McAllen this week. Mrs. McDaniel is the daughter of Mrs. Marguerite Gibbs of McAl len and has made her home here for eight years. She was graduated from McAllen high school in 1989 and later attended Edinburg junior college She was a leader in school dramatic circles for a number of J years and has been an outstanding member of the younger social set in the city throughout her residence. During recent months she has been employed as secretary to Thornton Thacker, manager of the Guaranty , Mortgage company in McAllen. Mr. McDaniel has lived in Mc Allen for the past 15 years. He at tended public schools here for a number of years and was graduated , from McAllen high school in 1928. | Later he attended Schreiner insti tudfc at Kernille for a period of two f years and then was a student at the f University of Texas. He is a mem ber of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. > For the past four years he has serv ed as business manager of the Mc I Allen Daily Press and is one of the leading young newspaper men of the Rio Grande Valley. • • • The home of Dr. and Mrs. J. Bride-elect Is Honored With Tea Shower life* Ehabeth Rowe, whose mar riage to Mr. Jack Wiech has been announced lor Saturday, June 1, was Honored with a pretty tea and show er Saturday afternoon between the hours of 5 and 7 o'clock at the heme of Mrs. Herbert D. Seago in L06 tsounov. The ah air had for hostesses Mrs. Seago, Mrs. Louise C. Perkins, Mrs. Ralph L. Buell, Mrs. Robert W. Fenwick, and Mrs. H. Austin Ellison, the latter of Falfurrlas. Guests were received by Miss Rowe, Mrs. John S. Rowe, mother of the bride-elect, and the hostesses. The honoree wore an attractive gown of white eyelet organdie over blue, made on long lines and trimmed with ruffles of the white organdie. With the costume she wore a sash corsage of pink rosebuds. Mrs. Seago wore a white organdie with embroidered dots of yellow, made on shirtwaist style. Mrs. Rowe was in figured blue and white or gandie, also made on shirtwaist style; Mrs. Perkins was in flowered chiffon; Mrs. Fenwick in white or grandie; Mrs. Ellison in blue with pink accessories, and Mrs. Buell was especially handsome in a lace afternoon gown of a deep ashes of roses shade. All wore corsages of phlox in varied tones. Assisting about the house were Misses Mary Frances Seago. Dons McKay, Eliabeth Anne Tandy. Cor inne Walton. Virginia Fenwick, Peggy Lam be rum and Mrs. Clar ence Bennett who wore pretty sum mer frocks in pastel shades. They wove corsages of phlox also. In the dining room, Mrs. Dick Strama. sister of the groom-elect, presided at the punch bowl during the first hour, and Miss Virginia Skinner during the second. The tea dainties were served from a table laid with lace and centered with an arrangement of white oleanders with fern in a low bowl. Elsewhere about the house were bowls and vases of the white oleanders and fern carry ing out the chosen color scheme of green and white. In the bedroom, where the gifts were on display, the room was made attractive with a profusion of pink rosebuds. Callers during the tea hours were entertained with musical selections by Miss Virginia Fenwick at the piano. Y., known to the Valley as the former Blanche Jones, one of the owners of the Brasher-Jones es tablishments at Harnngen and McAllen, is In the Valley on a combined business and pleasure trip. Mrs. James will be in Har lingen and McAllen for the next two weeks. Honored With Shower Event Miss Sarah Siiapiro entertained Saturday afternoon at a pretty af fair honoring Miss Iola Rosa, whose marriage to Mr. W. Hugh Biggs, will take place Wednesday. The event took the form form of a bridge and linen shower. Games of cards were enjoyed dur ing the afternoon. Later the honoree was escorted to the dining room where a large bell hung lrom the ceiling. Attached to the bell were ribbons with the opposite ends be ing fastened in various places about the room where the many gifts were hidden. Intimate fnends of Miss Rose were among those present. Miss Rose is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Joe R. Rose of Harlingen. She has been a teacher in the Brownsville school system for several years and has many friends in Brownsville. Mr. Biggs has been a resident of Brownsville most of his Ufe and is connected with the Pan-American Airways. -o Electrified Map Is Made by Children Of School Here The pupil* of the high fourth class of the Washington Park school of which Mrs. Anme S Putegnat is principal entertained their mothers recently with a program of class activities. Mrs. F E. Morris, presiding Splendid reports were given from all of the church societies. Mrs. Jim McFall was endorsed to take the place of Mrs. W. S. Harvey who is on the social service com mittee, and who is leaving soon to make an indefinite visit with her daughter in Florida Following the business meeting. Mis* Virginia Fenwick entertained with some piano selections and Miss Hilda Collins gave several enjoyable readings. This was the last meeting for the year of the Federation. The next meeting will be held the fourth Fri day in September. Pie Supper Will Be Held at Parsonage On Friday Evening The Epworth League of the First Methodist church is having a pie supper Friday evening at 7:45 p. m The affair will be held on the lawn of the parsonage. The girl mem bers of the League are to bring pies, and the boys are to purchase them All Leaguerers are especially urged to be present. Annual Picnic Held by Club At Port City The Literature and Arts Review held its annual picnic Friday at the Hotel Brazos in Port Isabel with a sea food luncheon. Following the delicious luncheon. Mrs Joe K Wells read a paper written by Mrs O. B. Sutton on • Present Day Forces in Mexico. The paper was splendid, and show ed a great deal of time, thought and study had gone into its composition. It covered the present day situation in Mexico and showed research into past history. Following the program the mem bers of the club held the election of officers for the ensuing club year. Mrs. R. a. Porter was re-elected president. Other officers elected were Mrs Burnell N. Goodrich, vice president; Mrs. Thurman A. Kinder. Jr., secretary: Mrs. C. S. Eidman. treasurer; Mrs Joe K Wells, corresponding secretary. Mrs. Wells is also chairman of the program committee, and other mem bers of the committee are Mrs Burnell N Goodrich and Mrs. C. 8. Eidman. Mrs. Rufus Ransome is chairman of the membership com mittee with Mrs. Lawrence Brady and Mrs. Wins hip Hodge as mem bers. After the business session, the club members enjoyed bridge games during the afternoon. The next and final meeting of the year will be in the form of a musical at the home of Mrs James L. Decherd entertained at an in formal tea Saturday evening honor ing their daughter. Mrs. Harold Les lie Lemburg, of McAllen, and to in troduce Mr. Lemburg to Austin friends. This is Mrs Lem burg's first visit home since her marriage Assisting the hosts in receiving were Dr. and Mrs George M De cherd. Mr. Ben Decherd of Dallas. Miss Mary Decherd. Mrs J H Jenkins and Mr. and Mrs. H S Jenkins of Bastrop. A group of close friends and sorority sisters of the bride composed the rest of the house party. Muss Martha Jane Butts, to Mr. Otto Netlsen. of Port Worth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peder Neilsen of Alamo. The mar riage will take place in Fort Worth. June 17. Mki Butts has been a student at Texas Christian University for the past year, and has been secretary in Dean Colby Hall’s office in addition to her school work. She plans to continue her studies after her mar riage. Mr. Neilsen is dean of men at Texas Christian. The couple plan to visit Browns ville for a short time alter their marriage.
