Church Picnics Held Lately In Harlingen HARLINGEN. Aug. 16. — Social activities for the past few weeks have been confined largely to in formal and outdoor affairs for the various church groups. Fair Park was the scene Monday evening for two large such meet ings when adult classes of both the Baptist and Methodist churches held picnic suppers. So successful was the joint social and picnic of the Homemakers class and the Friendship class of the First Baptist church that plans were made at the affair Monday evening for a similar affair to be given at Fair Park. September 6 for all members of the Adult dep artment of the Sunday school. Miss Martha Stack was director tor a stunt program and the group atnglng which followed the supper. The Daughters of Wesley Class of the First Methodist church school entertained Monday evening et Fair Park with a fried chicken supper honoring the husbands and children of the members. . An interesting and appropriate program was given under the direction of Mrs. Fred Roane which mcluded readings by Mrs. J. S. King, harmonica musical selections by Lloyd Hudson and range songs by the Cowboy Quartete composed Of Billie Cole. Neil Medley, Edwin Markowskv and Bob Mltchel. O. in Yellowstone National Park, were Joint honorees at a sur prise gift shower given by Mrs J. C. Terhune at her home Wednesday afternoon. The travel idea predominated In decorations and in the mode of presenting the gifts which were dainty and practical gifts for tra veling The gifts were concealed in parasols, lunch kits, Gladstone bags and a bird cake, brought in by "porters”. A week end outing party to Boca Chica is olanned by the group for Saturday morning. . • • • Miss Geraldine McKenna will be hostess to members of the Senior Department of the Methodist church school Friday evening at her home 306 East Taylor street. The affair will be in the form of a masquerade party and will be held on the lawn. I • • • Mrs. Herman Watson was hostess Wednesday afternoon to members of her brlge club and a few guests. A feature of the afternoon was the surprise shower arranged for Mrs Nunnaly Chenault, member of the club. . Trophies In the afternoon games went to Mrs. C. C. Parker, Mrs. Lew Williams of San Benito. Jardin Club Has Social Thursday Members of El Jardin Heights Social club met Thursday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Mather in El Jardin. The affair took place on the lawn of the home. C. Cl ore following the school board meeting here Monday evening. Mr. Clore, a member of the board, was celebrat ing his birthday it also was the birthday of his eldest son, Walter, and his fifteenth wedding anni versary. Parents have already entered the following children: Barbara Ann Cholic, Ann Rita Poelker. The Latin-Americans will also have a babies popularity contest and so far have entered Solla Relna. W. held Thursday night in Weslaco at the Weslaco hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Emory Parnell, of La Feria, gave the program for the 50 members andg c^ts of the organi zation present. The d'ogram was made up of readings and vocal num bers and was most enjoyable. During the business members of all the Valley clubs were urged to at tend the district conference which will be held in McAllen. Nov. 16 and 17 with Mrs. Anne Currington of Corpus Christ 1, district director, presiding. Hanna Home The misisonarv department of the Christian Church council met at the home of Mrs. B. O. Hanna the first part of the week. The home was prettily decorated with flowers. Twenty members of the group were present and enjoyed a treasure hunt. The ladies found a variety of treas ure in the form of a number of use ful and attractive gifts. Mrs. J. M. George. Mrs Roy Ruff and Mrs. C. D. Personette were lucky in finding the treasure. A refreshing dessert course was served at the close of the afternoon. O. Wilson. Trophies went to Mrs. J. Yost and Mr. Jimmy Noble and to Mr. Har old Martin, the latter being pre sented with the floating award. Those present were Messrs, and Mesdames John Carpenter. Thurs day evening at 8:30. The pretty ceremony was performed In the lovely garden surrounding the home. Dr. Hugh Robertson of the Firft Presbyterian church read the marriage lines. The bride was given In marriage by her father. She wore a becoming frock of grey georgette with soft niching at the neck and sleeves. A corsage of pink rosebuds, baby's breath and fern completed her en semble. Her accessories were in del icate shades of pink. Of sentimental interest a as the handkerchief which she carried which had been carried by her paternal grandmother on her wedding day. Just after the ceremony an lnfor n al reception was held. Punch was served from a table in the garden with angel food squares, iced in pink and white and topped with' miniature wedding bells. Misses Jo sephine Wasson. Prances Wood and Mrs. Marvin Burgess served the f&inties while Mrs. Fred Booth had charge of the bride's book. Following the wedding and recep tion. Mr. and Mrs. Casey departed for Monterrey where they will spend their honeymoon. Mrs Casey is well known in San Benito, having resided here since childhood. 8he is a graduate of the San Benito high school and later attended the high school department of Our Lady of The Lake College In San Antonio.
