The World At a Glance . I By LESLIE E1CHEL Central Pres* Staff Writer NEW YORK. Sept. 4— Republi can sleuths say that Senator Wil liam E. Borah is out in front for the O. O. P. Republican nomina tion. That puts financial New York in to a peculiar position. Borah be lieves in “expanded and managed" currency. That, to financial New \crx, spells inflation. President Roosevelt, “with all his faults," doesn't believe In inflation. Borah stands square on the con stitution, but is a ailverlte. And. be- , tween the two. financial New York would rather have the constitution amended (provided the amendments ! appeased the people and did not , deprive interests of their property right) than to have "any more Jug gling of the currency.” The “trouble” with the Republi cans is that they have to carry the midwest and the west to win—and th? western Republicans, with the exception of Herbert Hoover, have Inflationary and silvery ideas. Tt would be queer if financial New York had to switch to Franklin D. Rcoeevelt to protect the currency. It begins to look as if the Republi cans. not the Democrats, will have the battle - rocked convention this tunc It's always the Insurgents who "cause trouble" anywhere. And It's In the Republican party that the Insurgents are trying to gain con trol. The lnsurging movement with in the Democratic party is the Old Guard. While the Old Guard Is pep pery. It lacks punch when It hasn’t power Besides. It will subside to win And the Democratic Old Guard, viewing Franklin D. Roosevelt as a winner. Is willing to go along with him to Its own victory—and then tantalise him. In the coming Republican con vention the Insurgents will try to sweep the field. They cannot win. ler the Old Guard has the money. But If the Republicans desire vic tory. they will have to appease the insurgents. They may make the ticket Borah and Vandenberg—Borah as a cross between regular and Insurgent, ana Vandenberg as fairly regular to the Old Guard. At one time the Michi gan senator was looked uoon as having progressive leanings, but now he Is the most audible spokes man the stand pat Republicans have In the senate. Of course, if Herbert Hoover, through control of southern dele gates. who were largely postmasters under him. wins the Republican: nomination, the disgruntled candl-> dates for the nomination are likely i to join the disgruntled Insurgents' and permit the national election to' go bv default, with the fight cen tered on gaining control of congress.1 RADIO PROGRAMS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER ♦ (Central and Eastern Central Time) Not#: An programs to key mad basic chains or groups thereof unless sped* fled; coast to coast <s to c) designation includes all available stations.
