The Chicago Tribune on that same day, last Sunday, April 1U, printed not only more advert tlsing than the New York Herald, but what Is believed to be the greatest amount ever printed in a single issue of any. regular main edition of a newspaper. Leaving out of account the twen ty-two columns of advertising printed by ths New York Herald on that day in the special sec tion devoted to tho interests ot Brooklyn and New Jersey and appearing only In those editions, the record of The Tribune for April 16 sur passed that of the Herald for the same day by more than 10.000 agate lines of paid advertising. Judge N. W. Rewell and Wife Celebrate their Wedding Anniversary. .. Forty years ago yesterday, JudgeN. W. Kowell led to the marriage altar, Miss Anna E. Ownby, Fitting it was that after two score years this most worthy couple should gather in their children and grand-children, and rela tives and make merry the anniversary day of this happy union. would that the married life of all could prove at-i congenial, as honest, as has been the example in the lives of Mr. and Mrs. RoweU. It is no mockery for them to celebrate their wedding anni versary, for it has proven a most fortunate day for them. Nearly their entire married life has "been spent in Afton. Probably no couple in the county is better known or more highly respecied. To the poor and needy of our city and vicinity they have ever proven friends. In the hick room they nave proven friends alike to both poor and rich. All Afton rejoiced with them yesterday, when their children, without one missing, and their grand children and relatives gathered at their home, where a feast was prepared such as only Mrs. Howell could prepare and a most happy day was spent. That they may live ng to celebrate their golden wed ding is the wish of all. Those present at their fortieth wed ding anniversary were: Tneir oldest son,. Dr. J. W Howell, and wife, and Mrs. Curry, mother uf Mrs Dr. Unwell, nil of Leon. Their oldest daughter, Mrs. ,). 1*. Wharton and litiHhuud, uf l^eon. llieir daughter, Miss liessie and youngest son, Xeal. Their two sweet little grand children -Edgar Howell and Ethel Wharton. Auditor and Mrs. J. 1£ Cherry, Mr. and Mrs. W, E. Cherry, and two children MissNeta and Naster Year, of Creston. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Draper, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Beard and ltev. anil Mrs. G. W. Maine, of Afton. Among the presents were forty ele gant and fragrant roses from Missouri and piesented by friends from Leon. Each rose represented a year of happy married life. Perhaps it is fittine at this time to giye a little Of the early history and life of Judge Kowell. »eal W. Howell is one of the most prominent lawyers of Southern Iowa and dates his settlement here from July 14, 1858,which was antecedent to thai of any other lawyer of Uuion County. He was born in Athens County, Ohio, June 10, 183t lu 1847 his father, Wil liam Howell, removed nith his family to Wapello County, this etate, purchas ing a claim, which he afterward entered and improved. Later lie removed to Decatur City, Decatur County, where he died in January, 1859. "ilia wife dieii at Afton, at the home ol his son in March, 1870. In 185J5 Mr. Howell returned to Athens and entered the Ohio University, where he graduated in 1850. He hegau the study of the legal profession at Centerville, Iowa, in 1857, with Judge Amos Harris and was admit ted to the bar in April, 1858 and came to Afton immediately afterward. His entire professional life has been passed as a member of the bar of Uuion County. He has been associated at diSerent times with most of the prin cipal lawyers at Afton. His first part nership was with Judge James (i. Day now of Dt.s Moines. This relation existed two years when Judge Day removed. In 1800 he became associated with Judge James McDill. January 1, 1800, his (partner became circuit judge and the partnership terminated. He was then associated with I). D. Gregory until the latter was elected to the bench in 1870. lie then remained alone until 1870 when J. M. Milligan, Esq., became his partner, which relation continued until' 1884 and since that time he has been alone. Few men are better known throughout Southern Iowa than is Judge Howell. His official career Iiun extended over a great many years. He was elected Judge of Union County in 1800, seiving two years. He was member of the Twelfth and Thirteenth general assemblies has twice served as mayor of Afton and was member of the Afton School Board fifteen consecutive years. The professional and ofticial career cf Judge Kowell is one that the youpg man who is entering upon business for life, professional or other' wise, would be wise to imitate. To a thorough knowledge of his profession and an excellent judgment of human nature, he adds a genial and kindly disposition, with a firmness of purpose that guides bim in the course he believes to be right. The universal esteem in which be is held by his fellow-citizens attest his influence for the best interests of the community, Politically he is a decided Republican. Reaching bis ma jority about the time the Republican party was organized he at once became enrolled in its ranks where he has been since found. He has never missed a regular election and was ever ready in exdting times of the past to defend the principles of the party of his choice. He has from his youth preferred and practiced temperance and has engrafted into his political creed the doctrine of prohibition.—Afton Star-Enterprise, A Thouiaiu) TorQties Could not express the rapture of Annie E.
