Ten joint resolution* bearing upon this subject irnve been introduced in congress, and a strong ettort will be nimle duriug the present session to pass a resolution for the sub mission tf tha necessary constitutional amendment to the legislatures of the seyeral slates. That any definite results will be ob tained is very doubtful. The United •states senate at the present time has many prominent members who would never dare to 'go before the people di rect as candidates for re election. They prefer-to deal with a comparatively few legislators, who are likely to prove inienable to "party discipline," or who 'linj be reached by more weighty and lucrative arguments. While it is some iuifs sttid tluit the people might not aIivavh elect the best men fytr senators, nobody in his wildest moments has suggested that Piatt of New York, Hantia or Koraker «.f Ohio, Quay of Pennsvlvaiiu or several other ptesent United States senators would dare to go before the people with the expectation of election at the polls —Albany Arjtns. Spain's Greatest Need. Mr. IV Olivia, of Burcelonia, Spain, ipen.ls his winters at Aiken, S. C. Weak nerves had caused severe pains in the back of his head. On using Electric Bitters, America's greatest Blood and Serve Remedy, all pain soon left him. He savs this itrand medicine is what his country needs. All'Auaericn knows that it cures liver and kidney trouble, puri nes the blood, tones up the stomach, strengthens the nerves, puts vim, vigor and new life into every muscle, nerve and organ of the body. If weak, tired •vailing you need it Every bottle uaranteed. Only 50 cents. Sold by j. Van Werden, Druggist. !3'vi5'f Senator Hoar .may perlmps not be teemed as having talked too much, but rather us having the-^wisdom to change his mind when convinced of the error of his ways. A clerk at the ca^itol accord ng to a statement published in the Washington Post, has discovered a speech delivered by him at Plymouth, Mass., on Dec. 21, 1895, in which he ok a stand on expansion which is in marked contrast to his preseut attitude. Part of the speech quoted is as follows: "The sons of the pilgrim have crossed the Mississippi and possess the shores of the Pacific. The tree our fathers set covered at first a little space by the sea ide. It has spread along the lakes. It has girdled the gulf. It has spanned the Mississippi. It has covered the prairie and the plain. The sweep of its lofty arches rises over the IJockv moun tains. Its hardy growth shelters the rozen region or the northwest. Its boughs hang over the Pacific. And in time—in good time—it will send its roots beneath the waves and receive under its vast canopy theislands of the sea." This pretty word picture at least places the venerable eentlemen in a position ol prominence as a prophet nor does his flop on the question of imperialism ser iously impeach his good sense. Most in Quantity. Beat In Quality, or ley's Sarsaparilla and Iron is a tonic, a blood purifier and a blood maker. It does hq( stop with merely curing certain diseases, li|te scrofula, sores, abcesses, etc., but cleanses and builds up tfje system. All who have tried it say there is more cure in one bottle of Morley'8 than in six of the other kinds. Van Werden^ Of all the funny subjects that have been discussed in the newspapers of late, the discussion as to when the twentieth centtiry begins is entitled to the prize. Column after column has been written in an endeavor to show that the twentieth century begins January 1, 1900, while as much more has been said to prove that it does not begin until January 1, 1901. It seems strange that a subject, upon which all should agree, should create so wide a difference of opinion. To most people the question is simple enough. As it takes one hundred years to make a century, it certainly takes nineteen hundred years to' make nineteen cen turies, hence the nineteenth century will be with us until 8 fail nineteen hnndred years have olapsed. That will bring us to December 31, 1900. Then the twentieth century begins and it is difficult to see how any other opinion could obtain. It is simple arithmetic, and not at all hard to understand. In fact the only problem about it is why people should not agree upon it. That Throtyln|] ft*adache. Would quickly leave you, if you used Dr. King's New Life Pills.
