Dame Fortune, a mistress chary of her smiles, cast her beaming countenance in our midst and the ray of pleasure falls upon one of our fellow townsmen who has struggled hard for many years to attain the goal of his ambition. At last the prize has been awarded him and he settles back into the comforts of his home and the responsibilities of hiq new position with the satisfaction of having fought a good fight. McGratli & Sti.l Woodland. One of the curious dealings of the United States General Postofliee came into W. C. Jeffrey's bands Tuesday. Six teen years ago last Vay, "Bid," tben in Council Bluffs, received a letter post marked plainly, "Sheridan, Montana, May 20,1884." It was addressed to Mr. William Jeffrey, at Omaha, and had been forwarded to him at C. B. by itar ties who knew liiin. On opening it, he found it was not from any person he knew, and could not be for him. En forcing it "This letter don't belong to me. I never lived in Omalm. 1 have correspondents in Montana, but not this party," he returned to the P. O. It went to the dead-letter office, was sealed again with its otlicial heal, endors ed by various hands with directions here and there, stamped twice more at Ouiaha and twice at Council Blufls, yel low labeled, lime stained and irayed. And Tuesday this letter returned to him. It came from the dead letter office to him at Creston, and was thence forward ed to him at Osceola. No human being knows where it has been all this time, or why it is returned. And he will now keep it. Here is the entire missive, evi dently meant for some other railroad man, !ut he knows neither the man nor the writer. On one side of a small, torn sheet, is a girl's writing apparently: "Dt*ar^Jncle: W# have not heard from you in some time. Aunt Mary isalmost sick worrying about it. Uncle, can you send the passes? It you can, send them right away. Father wants to go away from here, and wants to know what are going to do. It is so dull here there is nothing going on here. Rob has gone away already. I am going to send John a letter day after to-morrow. Please ans. soon. Your niece, Beckie." "Aunt Mary" next took a hand. On the other side of this she wrote: "Sher idan, May 19, 1884.—Will why don't you write and are you "ever going to send for me if you are not I wish you would write and tell me one way or the other I thought you intended to send for me when you got Paid But I have not heard from you Since if you don't want me to send for me let me know as soon as you can for I must do something I will not stay here much longer Ik new as much a month ago about going as I do now write soon Mary." And these are the letters that have been going up and down the United Statesforsixteen years —almost. After falling what he thought to be about four hundred feet he struck a slope and slid down to the bottom where he landed about knee deep in mud and water.
