A
good story is being told about a
Juror wlio- was drawn for service !n
the criminal omirt recently on ft' mur
der case. He was one of Hhose men
who was willing to do his part as a
good citizen, but he had a prejudice
Against circuinstancial evidence which
Avas So strong he could not dispel it
from his mind and it finally beoatne
hecessaty to excuse him.
He answered the questions put to
him by the prosecuting attorney to
qualify, but when the attorney for the
defendant got down to where he asked
him If he could convict a person on
circumstantial evidence he hesitated.
"Why do you hesitate?" asked the
judge.
"Well, I'll be frank with you," re
plied the juror. "I don't believe in !t."
"If the evidence was so overwhelm
ing that there could be no doubt of
the guilt of the prisoner wouldn't you
vote to convict'/"
"No."
"Why?"
"Judge, can I whisper to you?"
"Yes."
There was a three-minute conversa
tion between the Judge and the juror,
at the conclusion of which the judge
smiled and then lie said: "Juror, you
are excused.''
The attorneys did not forget the in-'
cident and at the close of the day's
session the.v asked the judge what t!i»
trouble was with the juror who was
excused.
The judge said the man told him lit*
was the owner of a farm in Cheekto
waga, and among his live stock was a
handsome pet calf. One day while he
was out in the barnyard chopping it
a fence with an ax this calf made a
break to get out of the yard. With
the ax still in his hand he ran after
the auiinaP and caught him by the
tail. Just as he was dragging it back
from an- opening in the fence a mem
ber of the family happened along, and
seeing him with the ax In his hand,
concluded he was suffering with .in
attack of senile dementia and hi his
fury was trying to hack the poor beast
into veal cutlets.
"Judge, "I was perfectly rational,
and I protested that I was attempting
nothing ef the kind," said the juror,
"but appearances were against me and
to this day I am unable to convince
my family that I was not crazy and
was not trying to murder that calf.
That's the reason I am against cir
cumstantial evidence."
Nightingales' eggs, which are finely
marked, are worth good prices, and,
knowing this, the dealer finds no dif
ficulty in obtaining larks' eggs and
coloring them to resemble the genuine
article. Specimens of his undoubted
but .misplaced skill have found their
way to collectors Ih all parts of the
world and yet, so completely and care
fully has the work been done, not oue
of the buyers has ever discovered
them to be ''manufactured."

Some man has discovered and called
general attention to the fact that in
this country the schools closed to male
students exceed In number those
closed to female students. Another
man, Prof. Yon Hartmann, of Ger
many, consoles the women who are
shut out of the universities in thi*
wise: "The lecture rooms seem to have
a magical attraction for you. They
are for you the paradise of intelli
gence. Absurd mistake! They are
uiueh more like barracks, where one
learns mechanically the manual of
arms. I am going to tell you the great
secret: The best means of education is
reading. Let those of you who care
little about diplomas and whose sole
ambition is to cultivate your minds
stay at home and read. Get it well
Into your heads that your brothers
and your future husbands who after
leaving the university do not read will
never be anything but stupid igno
ramuses, and that all the university
in the world are useless to a woman
who knows how to read."

Talk about the Yankees and their
wooden nutmegs, but yield the palm
to the French in the matter of eggs.
From recent observations of an expert
collector of birds' eggs, it become ap
parent that there was in existence a
person who made a living by imitating
nature in the production and coloring
of birds' eggs.
It was traced to a Parisian dealer,
and some interesting details as to the
method used have come to light. The
unscrupulous but Ingenious Freuch
mfin was at one time an assistant in a
large museum, and here he learned the
value of many rare eggs. Being of an
enterprising nature, he started busi
ness on his own account, and made
numerous experiments before he came
to perfection.
He generally uses the shell ef some
common egg, chosen for Its likeness in
size and shape to the one desired, but
when that is impossible, gypsum is
used, this, when properly colored, be
ing undistinguishable from nature's
handiwork. The coloring process :s
not costly, but a very lengthy and
tedious operation, for each variety of
egg has Its distinctive marks and
spots.

The Now York Hei aid of April 17 printed an
editorial statement that on tiie previous day
(Sunday. April IB) iti' paid advertising reached
the high water mark in that journal's history.
The Chicago Tribune on that same day. last
Sunday. April 10. printed not only more adver
tising than th® New "York Herald, but what is
believed to be the greatest amount ever printed
in a single issue of any regular main edition of
a newspaper, l^eavints out of acoount the twen
ty-two columns of advertising printed by the
New York Herald on thfit day in the special sec
tion devoted to the interests ot Brooklyn and
New Jersey and appearing only in those editions,
the record of The Tribune for April 16 sur
passed that of the Herald for the same day by
more than 10,000 agate lines of paid advertising.
Even allowing the Heraid all it claims, includ
ing its Brooklyn and New Jersey supplements,
the New York Heo-ald on that day still fell short
of The Tribune by more than 1.000 lines in
the actual amount of paid advertising.
The exact figures are given as follows: The
New York Herald of April 10 printed in its main
edition, exclusive of its Brooklyn and New Jer
sey supplements. T7.823 agate lines of advertise
ments. Including those supplements it claims
86,760. The CWcago Tribune printed that
day 88,450 agate lines of paid advertisements.
The comparison should 1e made In lines of agate
measure, because the columns of The Trib
une are longer and contain :S05 agat? lilies,
while those of the New tYork HeraJd contain only
288 lines of agata eacll.
