Marrying Under Difficulties.
Squire David Perkins, of Decatur
county, was failed Inst Wednesday eve
ning to perforin.the marriage ceremony
for a couple in the north part of Wood
land township. When he reached the
designated place the prospective bride
and groom were not iti evidence hut the
mother of the girl was. She had got
wind of the intentions of the couple and
followed them to the house of a neigh
bor where the Squire had beeu directed
to come and tie the matrimonial knot.
Not finding her daughter or prospective
son-in-law present she became some
what pacified, but when Uncle Davy ap
peared on the scene, her .worst tea'.s
were confirmed and she '•jumped oi'td
him," as it were, with both feet, a 3d
gave him notice then and there that if
he married the couple she would holt'
him strictly and legally responsible for
the results. As she proceeded with a
tirade against the would be husband and
daughter, there was a movement up
stairs and the sound of lnuflled cuss
words followed by the appearance of
the young man at the foot of the stairs
with blood in his eye and with more and
louder cuss words declared that he could
whip the whole outfit. The old. lady
was game, however, and Squire Perkins
was compelled to stand between the
two and command peace several times
in his most dignified official capacity
before peace was restored. After renew
ing her threats and injunctions against
the 'Squire the old lady finally withdrew
from the scene and immediately after
the girl cauie in from the barn where
she hau been in hiding, the license, ex
ecuted in due form by the Clerk of the
Courts tor Decatur County was produc
ed, and with some trembling and occa
sional apprehensiye glances toward the
door, the Squire then performed the
ceremony that made the two loving
hearts beat as one.—Lineville Tribune.

liiram Kane, whose visit to Illinois
was mentioned, just previous to Christ
mas, was in The Democrat office again
this week, and while here spoke of meet
ing Joe Jacobs, at Galva. Before the
war—some years, the exact date is not
at hand, Jce Jacobs shot Dr. Lucas,
while the latter was advancing to his
(Jacobs') house, pistol in hand, through
the yard in front. This was about two
miles east of Hopeville. Dr. Lucas fell
dead, and of course Jacobs' arrest fol
lowed. He was convicted, sentenced
for murder in the first degree, to twenty
one years in the penitentiary, and was
serving his sentence when the war
broke out. Gov. Kirkwood pardoned
bim on condition of his enlisting, and
he fought through the war. He is now
eighty-two yegfg pld, a hard, vile old
man, yet. lie told Mr. Cane he'd shot
another man within the past two years,
and after being eleven months in the
penitentiary bad got out—he said
through the influence of his money. He
boasted of having a great deal of money,
which he said he kept buried, and no
body knew where it was but himself,
He has had four wives, two having been
divorced. Probably most of those who
remember the old crime would have
supposed him dead long years ago. Few
violent and criminal men e^er live to an

A movement to establish a free rural
mail delivery route from Lineville has
been started among the enterprising
farmers of the neighborhood east of
town. A petition to the pontoflice de
partment is in circulation and is being
signed by all interested in the establish
ment of the route and assurances have
bsen received from Col. Hepburn, our
Representative in Congress, that he will
present the petition and recommend its
establishment. The proposed route
starts from Lineville east on the state
road to Henry Jefierson's place, thence
north-east via Dyas Neill's, to John'
Funnell's, thence north to the vicinity
of Clinton Center returning via George
Barker's, Will Hughes', J. E. and Geo.
Rockhold's to Lineyille, but if establish
ed the route may be changed or modi
fied. Rural free mail delivery was
started as an experiment by the postof
fice department, but has been a success
aad the pressure tor the establishment
of routes has been so great that the
appropriations for that purpose have
been exhausted. It is expected, how
ever, that the present Congress will
make additional appiopriations and
that rural free delivery will become a
permanent feature of our postal system.

slightly scalded. John Leazenby, of

along, but we trust they are doing nicely
