Decatur County Produces the Prize Corn Freak. The States of Missouri and Nebraska are engaged in a little controversy as to which State can produce the biggest freak in the way of an ear of corn. A recent issue of the St. Louis Republic contains the following article illustrated with a cut of the remarkable ear ol corn. Missourians not only insist upon being shown, but they are willing to show others when occasion offers, says the KanRas City Times. When any other Commonwealth of the Union lays claim to pre-eminence in any particular, before accepting its claim as valid the inhabitants of Missouri insist upon posi tive proof. It doesn't matter whether it is a question of the annual output of mules or that of the number of train robberies committed, Missourians are skeptical, until they are shown. Nebraska claims to have produced a freak in the agricultural line which has not been dupli cated elsewhere It is nine ears of corn giown within one husk, and is now on exhibition on West Ninth street. But Missouri has seen this Nebraska freak and gone it one belter. Mr. Geo. E.Spraker, who has an office in the Hall building, brought to tlie office of I he 'I imes yesterday a freak of nature in the corn line which consists of ten perfect ears, u!l of which grew within one husk. This '-mon strosity in the freak line" in now on exhi bition in a window of the counting-room of the Times. It was, virtually, "made in Kan sas City, U. S. A„" as it was grown upon Mr. 8prak r's farm in Jackson County, The freak contest is up to Nebraska now. But while Missouri and Nebraska feel proud of nine and ten eared corn it re mains for Grand Old Iowa to fro them not one but two belter. We now have on exhibition at THK RKPORTER ollice twelve ears ol corn all grown in one husk and fastened together. The curi osity was raised on the farm of .Mr. ,1. It. Orees, of Grand Hiver township. Mr. Crees also brought us a curiosity in the shape of an ear of yellow corn on which there are five half rows of dark red grains. We will wait for Missouri and Nebras ka to equal Iowa and if necessary we can stand the raise. A Night of Terror. "Awful anxiety was felt for the widow of the brave General Eurnham of Ma chias, Me., when the doctors said siho onnlfl nrtf litra till mAvnSnf*" nMia« lie from pneumonia, but she begged for r. King's New Discovery, savins? it had i-ureil her of consumption. After three doses she slept easily all night, mil its further use completely curc-d ner."
