Betts, of Spring Valley, was in this city Monday on his way to Des Moines, where he went to settle some buainess matters with the Northwestern railway. Mr. Betts says in regard to the rumored extension of the North western which is to pass through 8pring Valley, that no less than three surveys of the proposed route have been made through that country and he believes the line will be built as pro jected. Van Horn, of this city, on Sun day received a letter from his nephew at Terry, Mont., with the sad news of the death of his brother, George Van horn, who died Sept. 26th. Van horn received the sad news. It is said that the state auditor has practically decided to give the position of custodian of that office to Mr. Edgar J. Thompson, a son of Andy Thompson, who lives over on Grand River. He is a bright young inan who graduated from the Leon High School a few years ago. 8ince then he has been associated with his brother, J. L. Thompson in publish ing the Bystander, the local colored people's paper in Des Moines. The Decatur County Teacher's Meet ing held at Lamoni Friday and Sa ur day was well attended and the session was very profitable to ihosb who attend ed. Mr. Owens is one of the best poultry men in the state and remembers ye editor almost every year with a fine fowl. Cris Trump, the veteran horse buyer was in l^eon Saturday and notwithstand ing the horrible roads purchased more than a car load. He is a quick buyer, pays top prices and is a most pleasant gentleman to deal with. Every one who sold to him seemed well satisfied. He will be back here again next week and farmers having horses tosell will do well to bring them in and let him price them. Mr. Wm. H. Howard and Miss Grace McCaull were married at the home of the bride's parents in Garden Grove Sunday. They came to l^on Monday and will go to housekeeping in this city. Both of the parties are yvell known to all our readers. The groom is an in dustrious carpenter, and has won an estimable young lady for his bride. The funeral was to have been held Tuesday afternoon, but when the funeral cortege reached the Leon ceme tery it was found that the grave was almost full of water, and the remains were brought back to the home and kept until yesterday morning when another grave was dug and the little body laid in its final resting place. Miss Jennie RoSengrant through her attorney S. H. Amos has commenced an action in the District Court for a diyorce from T. J. Rosengrant. They were mar ried near Leon, March 5,1871, and lived together until March 8,1895, when she alleges he deserted her and eloped with a married wouian named Lill Smith, and has since lived in adultery with the said woman. The plaintiff asks that she be divorced from defendant and be restor ed to her maiden name, Jennie Beavers. Harvey DeKall? returned Monday eyening from Chesterville, Texas, where he spent the summer on his father's ranch. He was right in the track of the Galveston storm and says she has had enough of Texas life. He will remain at DeKalb this winter with his mother and expects to return to Wyoming in the spring and engage in the cattle business. He brought with him a lot of large^yams which were grown on Dr. DeKalb's ranch and kindly remembered THE RE MOTER editor with a mess which we ex pect to enjoy at our Thanksgiving dinner to-day. C. E. Blair, of Lamoni, was in Leon Thursday and informed us that Lt. Edward Koontz, first lieutenant Co. of the 44 U. S. Vols, had been shot and killed in the Philippine Islands. He was the companion and friend of bis son Lt. Will Blair, second lieutenant in the same regiment, and hia death will prob ably result in Lieutenant Blair being promoted from second to. first lieuten ant. No particulars have been received, but it is Bupppsed Lieutenant Koontz was shot by natives. later particulars show that lieuten ant Koontz and Sergant Kitchen both of Co. F. were pierced by native spears wbile going to relieve 'tin outpost, at Btigason, Island of Panay. "Faust" Coming. Mr. Hubert Labadie, supported by a strong troup and a strong company will present Goethe's famous immortal drama "Faust" at the Leon opera house next Saturday night, Dec. 1st. Al though Mr. Labadie is a stranger to the theater goers of Leon, he comes well recommended and is highly spoken of by all who have seen him as Mephis to in "Faust." Mephisto is a character that-few actors have made a success of. Mr. Labadie has been playing Faust for- the past seven seasons, and that fact alone is an assurance that be must have made a success of it. Hazlet went to Webster City laet Thursday and spent several days in that vicinity looking at fine cattle with a view of replacing the Red Poll bull which he lost a short time ago. Mrs. Ann Moler, of Davis City, who was adjudged insane and sent to the asylum at Clarinda on August 18, lias been discharged as cured and returned to her home at Davis City Tuesday. Miss Ella Kemp, a former Leon young lady who has been employed as sales lady in the lace department of Younker Bros, store in Des Moines, has resigned her position to accept one in the music department at Frankel's. We acknowledge the receipt of'a com plimentary ticket to the International Live Stock Exposition to be held at Chicago Dec. 1 to 8, through the court esy of Brown Bros. & Ballinger, the live stock commission firm at Chicago of which Capt, J. D. Brown, of this city, is a member. Elsewhere in this issue appears a no tice signed by a number of farmers liv ing west of town, prohibiting hunting or shooting on their farms. Careless boys recently shot a cow for P. C. Watsa baugh and several others have had their stock frightened by hunters, so they met together and decided to put stop to all bunting. Master John Bell celebrated his sixth birthday last Saturday by entertaining about twenty of his young friends at bubble party at the" home of his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry P. Bell. The jittle ones had a great afternoon blow ing bubbles and indulging in various games. Refreshments were served and ^Master John was remembered by many presents from his playmates. There is no economy in buying cheap soaps. Most all yellow or brown soaps contains large per cent, of rosin as a filling. His dress and skirt were nearly burned off, but strange to say the flames did not reach his skin. The McClelland Cigar Co. on Tuesday made their last cigars in this city, and they are now invoicing and packing preparatory to moving the factory next week to Atchison, Kansas, where the business will be resumed on a larger scale. The most of the employes will go to Atchison and continue to work for them. We are sorry to see the factory go, for it has given steady employment to quite a number of men and boys who earned good wages and the money was all spent here in Leon, but the field was too small and they thought best to go to a larger city. Engineer Charles E. Combs, of Chari ton, one of the best known and most popular engineers running through Leon on the Chariton and St. Joe branch of the Q, met with a serious and what might have been a fatal accident while out bunting Friday. He waB out by himself and when going through a barb ed wire fence the gun exploded and dis charged the entire load into bis left arm just below the shoulder. A farmer boy who was mending a fence in the neigh borhood heard the shot and saw him fall. He ran to his assistance and got him home, where the doctors examined his arm and found the bone shattered to fragments and advised amputation. Mr. Combs finally consented to the operation being performed and is now doing as nicely as could be expected. If the shot had struck a trifle to the right it would have killed him. Prof. Axline, of Humes ton, will officiate as referee and Lew Horner, of Lamoni, as umpire. The officials are selected from out of town so as to be entirely fair to both teams. Dr. B. R. McAUaster is manager and Lewis B. Jack son captain of the Leon team, and Sutherland is captain and manager for the Mt. Ayr visitors.
