Y. 46-10t A letter from S. .1. Walters, a former well known resident of this county, now residing at Magdalene, S. D., enclosing a renewal for his Reporter, says they have had an abundance of rain in that country this year, and crops of all kinds are fine except where they were damag ed by hail. H. L. Northrup, of Garden Grove, member of the board of supervisors, has purchased an interest in the gen eral store of his brother A. E. North rup, at Garden Grove. The North rup boys are popular business men and they will make a strong firm. They expect to enlarge their business and make a number of improvements at their store. Pease & Pease, the local agents for the old reliable Farmers' Insurance Co., of Cedar Rapids, have recently settled with Andrew Jones, of near Grand River for the loss of a mule, and with John W. Wasson, of near Leon, for damage done to his barn by a wind storm. In both cases the parties were well pleased with the. liberal settlement made, and will continue to carry their insurance with Pease & Pease. We are in recoipt of a letter from S. R. Kohal, of Roberts, Montana, ordering The Reporter sent to him. Steve who is an old Decatur county boy has fully recovered from the se vere wounds he received some months ago while arresting a' couple of toughs, he being a constable. He says to tell all of his old friends tac.k here "Hello," and that he would like to be back in old Iowa and cut a bee tree- again with Ross Sanders, steal some watermelons from Silas Whisler, and visit with John Bell and Bill Craig. He says he remembers too when Gus Pryor raised some good melons and so did old dad Hudson. During the thunder shower Sun day afternoon a stack of hay confin ing about eight tons, on the farm of John Rumley, northwest of Leon, wa struck by lightning and burned. We have several good second-hand autos on hand which we will sell at a bargain or will trade them for live stock. P. E. Brady was called to Platts burg, Mo., last Friday by the serious illness of his mother, Mrs. Margaret Brady, who is suffering from a can cer. Mr. Brady returned home Mon day night, has mother having been taken to a hospital in Kansas City, where she was operated upon Tues day. A letter from O. B. Marble, form erly of Davis City, now agent for the Southern Pacific R. R. Co., at Mon terey, California, requests us to hold his Reporter until further notice, as he and his wife were leaving for a trip to Vancouver, New York City and Chicago, and expect to reach Da vis City in time to enjoy a visit with his mother during the Davis City re union. Harry Hemphill, who is known in the theatrical world as "Huntress," who has been absent in Australia and New Zealand for nearly a year, fill ing an engagement, arrived Sunday for a visit with his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hemphill, and old friends, He was accompanied by his sister, Mrs. J. D. Sullivan, of Los Angeles, California, who will also visit here for a time.—Chariton Herald-Pat riot. We are surely mighty glad we have The Leon Reporter on our list. Last week they announced a new kind of pastime in Decatur county. They had a willow peeling in one of the neighboring townships. Long, a well known farm er residing in Center township, was before the insane commission last Thursday, and was ordered taken to the state hospital at Clarinda for treatment. Mr. Long, who is 63 years of age, has been in poor health for the past year, when his mind be came affected, and in the past few months he has been growing worse, so it was thought best to send him to the hospital for treatment, he being accompanied to Clarinda by his son, J. G. Long. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Cain, of Chi cago, and Mrs. Cain's sister, Mrs. J. D. Brown, of this city, arrived last week in their auto for a visit at the home of Capt. J. D. Brown in this city. They came out over the River to-River road to Des Moines, then over the Inter-State Trail to Leon. Mr. Cain says Iowa has Illinois beat a city block when it comes to good roads. lAr. and Mrs. Cain expect to start on the return trip today, and will drive over the Lincoln Highway on the return trip. Earl Akes received a new Yale motorcycle Tuesday and he won't take the dust from any motorcycle or auto in this part of the state now, for it is a mighty fast machine. It was purchased from the local agent, Fay Eaton. This county was visited with a dandy rain again last Sunday even ing, and the corn crop of Decatur county is fairly cracking, it grows so fast. The prospects for a bumper crop are mighty good. Out in the Rue Stone neighborhood Sunday they had a four inch rain. C. A. Cherrington this week in stalled a new ice cream packer in connection with the fountain at his drug store. It is white enamel with silver trimmings, and is a dandy neat fixture, and it will be a great con venience as it will enable them to carry extra flavors of ice cream and ices for special occasions. Jack Adair, who escaped from the city o!iirrs who were trying to ar rest him on the night of July 4th. was tried before Justice A. R. War ford last Saturday, and was bound over to the grand jury under bonds of $2",ii on the charge of resisting an officer. He gave tlie* necessary bonds and released from custodv. A plate glass in the front of Add Ausman's billard parlor was broken in a mysterious manner Monday. Someone up the street threw a stone toward the building, which struck on the cement walk and glanced up and made a hole in the window. No one saw the stone thrown and the fellow who threw it is keeping mighty quiet about it. M. F. Crimes and his children, Cecil. Forest and Marion, ar.d his mother, Mrs. E. S. Grimes, left Tues day afternoon in the Grimes car for a trip to Omaha, Neb., Troy, Kan., Oilman City, Mo., and other points. Mr. Grimes decided to visit all his brothers and take his mother with tliem, and they are expecting an en joyable trip. E. D.
