Boswell, of southeast oi ^eon, who were recently married, -endered them a big surprise party iast Thursday evening, bringing the good things to eat and a most en pjoyable time was spent by all. Mrs. D. H. Hubbard, of Morgan .ownship, has received word of the birth of a little daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hubbard, of Doniphan, Neb., and she is feeling pretty proud over being a grandmother, as she is 62 years old and this is her first grandchild^ Delbert Scull and Edgar Reynolds walked out to the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Reynolds and 3pent the week end, and had the time of their lives. Delbert says it was the first time he ever had his nil ot countrv cured ham. They also anjoyed a fishing trip while in the country, but owing to the scarcity or bait did not have much luck in lur ing the finny tribe, but expect to try it again. After being out about two hours the jury in the trial of Clarence Thomas charged with the murder of Herbert Peace in a restaurant at Mercer, Mo., on the 28th of last September, returned a verdict of "not guilty." The evidence disclos ed that Peace had been drinking and went to the Thomas restaurant and created a disturbance and at tacked Thomas, who finally picked up a ball bat and struck Peace, crushing his skull. Mr. and Mrs. Will F. Lindsey and son Bobby and Billy and Mr. S. C. Penniwell motored to Des Moines Saturday evening and visited over Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Penniwell. Will says the fel low who told him the roads from Leon to Des Moines were in good condition was a monumental liar, for they were a fright, and they had considerable trouble getting through the mud holes, and then had to leave their car at Des Moines on account of Sunday's rain and return home on the train. W. R. Wilcox, who has been with the Princeton Telephone Company for the past eight years, has accept ed a position as general manager of the Leon Telephone Company. Riley is not. only, an expert lineman but has learned the business from the ground up and knows every detail of it. He is courteous and accom odating and the Leon Telephone Company is fortunate in securing his services. Riley is not only good telephone man but he is also one of our best citizens and we are sorry to hear of his leaving. Princeton Telegraph. James T. Hackworth of Ottumwa who died recently has left his estate valued at from $500,000 to $750, 000. after the death of his wife, to the Ottumwa Library association that organization to have the Reve nue from his estate and tnis, with the city tax, will give the library an annual income of about $50,000. Mi hackworth was largely respon sible for securing the Carnegie do nation several years ago and has been president of the library board. That donation will perpetuate his name in Ottumwa and the state al ways. Clarence P. Bartlett has succeed ed in getting the agency for the Dodge Brothers car, in Garden Grove township and has a car on hand .to show you at his hew garage. The in spection this year was out of the ordinary, being more in the nature of a school of instruction, and the Knights who were present were greatly benefitted by inspector Ken nedy's visit^ Three Decatur county soldier boys were on the Leviathan which arriv ed at NTew York last Saturday, bring ing the 168th regiment, Corporal Francis E. Richards, of Leon, Cor poral Harry R. Dingman, of Decatur, and private Donald J. Price, of Van Wert. Jimmie Hoffman, of Leon, is a member of the crew of the Levi athan, and has made a number of trips to France bringing troops home. We understand that Reatus W. Bruner and Isaac Martin, both of Decatur, also arrived at New York last week on another troop ship. All of these boys are expected home in the near future. Mrs. Maurice Elder went to New York last week to meet her husband who landed at Newport News Sunday morning, and will be sent .to Camp Funston to be mustered out. Mrs. Elder writes she was met at New York by her brother, Forest Grimes, and had the pleasure of being shown all over the battleship Pennsylvania, on which Forest is stationed. Mrs. Elder went to the Hostess house in New York City, and almost the first person she met was Mrs. C. S. Marsolf. who was there awaiting the arrival of her husband, Rev. C. S. Marsolf* who has been doing Y. M. C. A. overseas work for the past year. ___________ C. R. Piercy, of Bloomington township, accompanied by Sergeant Perry M. Kelley, of Lamoni, who, recently returned from nineteen months overseas duty with the avia tion corps, were visitors in Leon last Friday and we enjoyed a visit from them. Sergeant Kelley had passed all of his examinations for a com mission in the aviation corps, hav ing worked through every depart ment and made a number of flights, and would have received a commis sion had the armistice not been signed when it was. He has had a great experience, in England and France, and seen a great deal of both countries since leaving Ameri ca, being one of the few Iowa boys who returned with three gold serv ice stripes. Ensign Port P. Bowsher arrived in Leon Sunday for a few days visit with his father, J. R. Bowsher and many friends in this city. He .s stationed at Pelliam Bay Park, about three miles from New Ro chelle, New York, and only a few minutes ride frqm New York City. Ensign Bowsher enlisted in the navy and went first to the Great Lakes Naval Training station near Chicago, being selected as one to attend the naval training school, from which he graduated and received his com mission in Marclu ,He has not been1 discharged from the service, being here on a twelve day furlough. He went to Des Moines this morning to attend the big reception given the boys of the 168th regiment who re tnrned* last week from France, and wiH return to New York from Des lfoiaes. The law specifically states that each and every sale must be of prop er record and in every instance the tax must be paid by the purchaser. In order to eliminate the possible chance of over-charge which might be caused by raising the price of our wares to cover this tax, we have in augurated a system of record which will be proper and just to our cus tomers. All prices wTill remain precisely as they are, and the exact amount of 5 per cent will be collected in every instance.
