fi A, 7 if lr U.i PAGE TWO" JACK LONDON'S SUDDEN DEATH (Continued from page 1.) ho spent a considerable time In Hawaii where he meant to live part of each year and write, but death In terfered with his plans. &jg§ London was married twice. His W* first wife who was the mother of his two 1 daughters, Bess and Joan, vas as$T divorced ten years ago. She was V,greatly shocked today when informed •f of her former husband's death. Sev 't oral years ago Liondon married again, his wife being the 'KJharmton" of his bookB. fl Income Was Larpe. SANTA ROSA, Calif., Nov. 23.— Jack London was rapidly becoming rich when he died. For severar years his work had been in great demand and publishers were paying him as high as ten cents a word, it is eeti mated that his income from his writ ings alone has been at least $40,000 .a year for several years and this does not include moving picture and other rights. London spent large sums on his Glen EJllen ranch and he often made the remark that he had to write stories to pay the expenses of «iis farm. Will Cremate body. i- SANTVA ROSA, Ca'.if., Nov. 23.— Without ceremony of any kind the body of Jack London, novelist and ad venturer, will be cremated at noon to ,morrow at the Oakland crematory. No minister or priest will prononuce a benediction, no prayers will be said, no choir will sing a requiem. Believing that death ends all and JS that there is no hereafter, London often said that when he died he4vish ed to be cremated and burled without ostentation. His wishes will be car ried out. Only his wife, daughters and sister will accompany Ihe body to the _. crematory. His mother. Mrs. Flora London, is seriously ill in her Oakland r.: home and has ribt yet been informed of i:--* her son's death. London's secretary today stated the novelist's income from his writings at xthe time of death averaged about twenty cents a word. He habitually wrote 1.000 words' a day anil this woul,, make his annual income from new lit erary work about $73,000 a year. So far a3 the secretary kDows, Lon don's only finished work which have riot been published are two novels, two short dog stories and several Hawaiian Btories. Arrangements for publication of Apse have not been concluded. At the time of his death London was working on a novel of Hawaiian life called "Cherry," which was well ad vanced. It is understood Mrs. Loudon either will complete the novel herself or will engage some other writer to complete it. Tfhe novelist^ five year contract with eastern publishers would have expired next year. Recently a repre eentative of an eastern company«was at Glen Kllen to induce London to re new his contract and London had pur l-chased railway tickets and arranged, ~tlto leave San' Francisco next Wedne* .day for New York to discuss the mat- 1 ter. He expected to return to Glenn 'Ellen in February when he hoped to he able to visit either Japan or Nor way—he was undecided which. ORDERED TO KILL BY GHOST (Continued rrcm page 1.1 a fortnight after Moore and seven others were hacked to death by an ax fiend in July, 1912. The lawyers were arguing the point when the noon recess was taken. Mrs. Willard, whose testimony that McCall and Jones were members of a grcAip she overheard discussing Moore threat eningly before the murder, still con fronts the plaintiff, made a sad show ing on cross examination by Beeson today. He forced an admission from her that she visited his office last week. Beeson claimed it was to spy on him, which she denied, saying she enter ed his office by mistake. When she failed to describe Beeson's office In detail, he thundered at her: "And yet you claim to remember distinctly the conversation and the men present at that alleged night meeting before the murder over four years ago?"
