TRUE MEANING OF "MORTIFY"
|Would Seem That Users of the Word
Have Little Conception of Its
Real Significance.

The Strange acquired meanings of
many words were being discussed the
other night, when one of the group
said: "I wonder how "mortify" has
come to mean something similar to
humiliate. The word shows on its
face that it was derived from the two
rootwords which mean 'death' and 'to
make,' yet except in the sense of gan
grene having set In It has no connec
tion with 'death' In our modern vo
cabulary."
