The Christian Eudeavorers held a re ception at the residence of A. K. Bailey last Wednesday evening. * * * A one ring circus held forth in West Decorah Friday and Saturday, and showed before quite a number of our citizens. A benefit ball was given at Steyer’s opera house for Prof. C. Gilbertson last Tuesday evening. Music was fur nished by Marsh’s orchestra, and a large number attended. The Ladies’ Aid Society of the M. E. church will meet with Mrs. A. A. Chandler Wednesday afternoon. All are invited to attend. Tea from five o’clock till all are served. The W. C. T. U. will hold their an nual meeting at the home of Mrs. Alice Griswold, 309 Broadway, Tuesday, •June Bth, at, at 3:00 o’clock p. m. A full attendance is requested. A base ball game between the Wau kon High School and Y. M. C. A. Jun iors on the home grounds Saturday afternoon resulted in a victory for Waukon by the score of 12 too. tu consequence of the absence of the Decorali City Band at the Commence ment exercises of the Upper lowa Uni versity at Fayette, no concert will lie given by them this week, but concerts will be given each week thereafter. The Epworth League reception of the M. E. church announced last Sun day to be given at (be residence of Mrs. A. J. Houck will not be held there, but will he given at the residence of Mr. F. L. Akers. 507 Mechanic St. next Friday evening at 7:30. The report of the District League convention held at Elma will lie read at that time. Light refreshments will be served. Ex cursion to Independence will be on sale at various business houses in the city. —Quite a number of our people ac companied the excursion to Dubuque Thursday, to attend the Woodmen fes tivities. Children’s day will be observed at the M. E. church next Sunday morn ing; and an opportunity will i»e given for the baptism of children. Items of General Interest Gathered Fiom the Press of lowa and Neighboring States. During the past week there was shipped from the Jenkins’ brick yard 90,<100 to Decorah, one car load to i’ost ville and one car load to Waukon.— Motionn Leader. Waterloo now has a bicycle factory. There is no point in lowa that is more than fifteen miles from a line of rail road. There is talk of a state checker tour nament at Des Moines during the state fair. The Salvation Army will hold a campmeeting at Tama City June 17-22. Centerville will during the summer provide Saturday entertainments, in the form of balloon ascensions, field sports, horse racing and music, to at tract trade to the town from the sur rounding country. The state supreme court has de cided that courts were not obliged to recognize the requests of parent as ex pressed in wills as to the guardianship of children, but the court must exercise its discreetion in the child’s interest. Commencement exercises of Upper lowa University will occur at Fayette June 4-10. The Baccalaureate discourse will be given by Rev. Rufus D. Black, I). I)., the Annual Sermon by Rev. F. W. Luce, A. M., the Alumni Lecture by Prof. J. A. Holmes, the University Lecture by 'ev. Frank M. Bristol, D. I)., tlie address to the Graduating Class by Rev. Lewis Albert Banks, D. It should have read Mrs. Mary Sanford. —The Decorah City Band are en gaged to furnish music for the celebra tion at Spillville the 3rd of July. They celebrate on the 3rd so that everyone can attend the grand celebration at Decorah on July sth. —“They are dandies” said Thos. Mr. Bear is also receiving letters from other places saying that they would co-operate with us in mak ing this one of the Grandest Celebra tions ever held in northern lowa. | Decorah’s Grand Independence Day Celebration Monday, July sth 1897. The citizens of Decorali are unanimous in offering to the people of N. E. lowa the Grandest Celebration ever attempted in this part of the country. They want their sister towns to join with them in celebrating the I ndepeiidenee Day by giving them a big delegation from every town a 100 miles of Decorali.
