Soiento, 111., Oct. 18. —Tterrlblo hav oo vu wrought by a cyclone which struck this place shortly after mid olglft. Forty buildings wore com pletely destroyed end every house In town damaged. Eight peoplo were killed outright and four others fataily Injured. Forty others required the services Of physicians to dress thotr wounds, and at least one hundred In all suffered Injury. The storm lulled only a few min utes, but its vollence was terrific, it cut a path completely through the cen ter of the town, starting at the south west corner and barely missing u-e upper works of the large Sorento mine. The storm was followed by a deluge of rain which made tne work of ros ette more difficult. Ail means of com munication were cut with the excep tion of one telegraph wire. Outside help has been secured during the day nnd the dead and Injured are now well cared for. Cloudburst Causes Washout. Alton, 111., Oct. 18.—A cloudburst last night caused a t>ait waßhout, and a Chicago, Peortn nnd bt. Louis train ten miles above thlH city plunged Into six feet of water in Hranch Creek. Two carloads of horaeß were lost and It la believed several tramps were drowned. Engineer Frank Drew, Fireman H. Mallard and Brakeman Al bert Patton were thrown Into the creek. Ilallard and Drew were res cued by Patton who waa scalded and la In a serious condition. Another Train Ditcha^l. St. Ixrnls, Oct. 18.— It Is reported thli afternoon that a Missouri Pacific train has gone Into tho river at New Haven, Mo. Several are said to have been drowned. Alice Hart man and her five children were burned to death and fhelr home was de>| ■troyed by flre fct Port Royal, a villa** In Franklin county. The Are occurred! Monday and the news of It was first' received at Clayton Tuesday afternoon through a messenger. The husband, William Hartman, escaped from the burning dwelling, but was unable to save any mem bers of bis family. The dwelling was a two-story frame building and burned like tinder. It la said a defective flue caused the Are The family was aroused from Bleep by dense smoke. Hartman and his wife and baby were sleeping on the first floor while the other four children slept upstairs. Mrs. Hartman, carrying her baby, rushed upstairs to arouse the chil dren and before Hartman could fol low tho building suddenly burst Into flames throughout and he was forced to leave his entire family to perish. The comptroller of currency at Washing ton last night ordered the bank closed, declaring It insolvent, and appointing Examiner Cunningham as receiver. Chicago, Oct, 18.—Judge kumplirey of the federal court this morning sus tained tho indictments In the beef trust cases as to four counts, alleging conspiracy to accomplish an unlawful restraint of trade. The indictments alleging attempts to conspire, and those alleging the marntenance cf a monopoly were unsustained. Tho packers will be forced to plead to the Indictments and stand trial. Newton, lowa, Oct. 17.—Jasper county votef* yesterday defeated the proposition to bond the county for 9100,000 and levy an annual 1.5 mills tax for ten years to build a new court house. Having investigated fully fifty cases during Its labors, the grand jury to day finished up Its session by return ing twelve Indictments, and having reported "no bills" In several cases, was dismissed, subject to tho call of the court. Tho session of the grand jury was marked by a large amount of work, and at least fifty cases were thorough ly Investigated during Its threshings. The Indictments contain nothing start ling and those thus rar made public are simply sequels to stories told In the police courts nnd In cases where Indictments wore predicted. Three Indictments were found sgslnst Joe Robertson, who rusbed In to the courts somo time sgo claiming a divorce from Mrs. Robertson on the grounds of cruelty. Hl*'complaint was dismissed and the suit tried upon her cross bill which developed evi dence that in the grand jury room caused the return of the Indictment*. True bills were brought by thb grand jury against the man, charging adul tery with one Etta A llendcr, the same crime with one Verie Geddls, and charging mallolous threats with Intent to intimidate his wife. John Jones was indicted for break ing and enterl. g. He is accused of robbing the A. Forsythe store at Bux ton, or Coopertown. Indictments were returned against BUI Hourihan and Frank Bmlth. The men stole sdmo brass at the Ramsay mines some months ago, and the case has since been dragging In the courts. H. He was a persistent suitor for Mrs. Millikan’s hand and had been here about ten days, calling on her repeatedly and pressing his suit, fib* discouraged him and last night he o«- cam# desperate. Ho displayed a re volver and Mr*. Millikan, fearing that he Intended to kill her, slipped from too houso and went to a neighbor’s, Her mother In the meantime had gone and notified the ponce, but when they arrived Campbell refused to ac company them and after some words ho stepper!
