Teachers' Institute opened auspiciously on Monday, a much larger number of teach ers than ustnil being present. The number im rr/i.vd rupidly until Wednesday, when it reached one hundred and forty-seven. Com paring the present with last year's Institute, we notice a largely increased attendance of male teachers and an evident general im provement in appearance. Nearly all tho best teachers ot long standing in the county are present, while a number of excellent teachers have made this county their home dui inj the put year. The increased wages now paid competent teachers, together with the good judgment displayed by the County Superintendent in granting graded cortili-. cates, are beginning to nttract superior tal cnt and to discourage incompetency. Prof, l'i, ier had been engaged to conduct tho ex« ercises of the Institute, but on Monday after the opening of the Institute and too late to procure other assistance, word was received that he could not come, on account of sick ness in hia family. His assistant, Mr. Kis sel, was promised, but ho too disappointed the Institute. Notwithstanding these unla vorable circumstances, the Institute is prov inga success, under the direction of the Co. Superintendent, assisted by Prof. Calvin, of Hopkinton, and Itev. J. D. Caldwell, of Jes up, with the hearty co-operation of the teach ers themselves. Jusvi', Nov. 27,1867. Me. Editor :—Want of time compelled in* to leave many things unmcntionod in my last lettur, including some important busi ness changes, buildings and improvements. Messrs. Smith & Cook have recently dissol ved partnership, Mr. Smith continuing in the grain business, while Mr. Cook iuteuds, 1 believe, to devote his whole attention to the lumber trade, which has here become an im portant business to much so that threo yards are uow iu operation, Mr. Thos. Tay lor's being tha largest establishment, while that of Messrs. Cook & Marsh is of more rrcent date. Both of these yards have done a heavy business during the past six or eight months, and the profit and loss" column is understood to exhibit "ag"od thing'' in favor of their owners. Stimulated by the success of otheri, Mesrs. Willmer, Warren & Farris, proprietors of the elevator now be ing built—uientiortd iu my last—have rev ceutly opened aiio'.hcr yard near their eleva tor. Dr. M. O. Baldwin has lately sold hi* store and stock of drugs and medicines to Mr. Creigbton, from Illinois, who will con tinue the business at t! e old stand. S. L. Willmer has sold hi« stock of dry goods and cries to a Mr. C. A. Harrington, who is ng to it a line of dry gjods and cloth ing as largs and complete as any in tbu place. We wclcouie both him and Mr. Cieighton to our village, and hope they may both meet with auccei Mr. riam. Taylor, the popular proprietor of the Kmpire House, is enlarging his hotel to meet the demands of his increasing custom, and designs to make it During the present term the attendance gon rally has been large, the number of pupils enrolled being forty-six. During the latter, part of the term, however, tho attendance has nut been as full as could be desired, the extremely fino full weather having taken some of the pupils from the school to attend to furtu work. This was to be regretted, as the examination would have been more in teresting, had there bocn a full attendance of scholars. Thu next term will commence on the 17th of December, 18G7, by which lime, it is thought, the church now being erected will be so far completed as to render the lower story ready for use as a school room. Mr. John hush,-of Bremer county, lias been rc-ciigaged as assistant for tho coming term. The public examination which commen ced, as stated, on Wednesday night of last week, was conducted by Mr. Caldwell and his able assistant, Mr. Hush. Messrs. McOmber, Moody and Howell were requested to act, and acted, as a com mittee, to notice tho mode and thoroughness of the laminations, and the proficiency of the scholars. The exercises on Wednesday evening consisted of examinations in Oram« mar, Analysis, Parsing and Bending. Thurs day evening was devoted to Mental and Practical Arithmetic, varied by Kssays by Misses Warner and Melrose, whilo Heading, Spelling, Declamations and Kssays, consti tuted the programme for Friday evening. The reading we notice as being particularly good, though we cannot say that we consid er concert reading well r.daptcd to display the elocutionary training of the pupils. Ma ny of the Ivssnys were well written, and some of them well read, though the rending was rendered somewhat defective by a seeming embarrassment. In the spelling we noticed but very few mistakes, which were promptly corrected by the class. In Grammar and Mathematics the scholars showed a degree of proliciency that was creditable, though the whole examination was scarcely as thor ough as could have been desired, owing to the short time allotted to it. So far as it was carried, however, it reflected credit on pupils and teachers, and showed a good de gree of advancement. in order to se It must be done, cure to Jesup the trade which prcpcrly be longs to her. People will not corue here through almost impassable sloughs and mud holes to trade, when they can, by going a few, or even several miles her, travel to and from market over good roads. The ex. pensc of making the necessary improve ments on the roads centering in Jesup would, I admit, be considerable, but it cau bo doDC gradually, and the increase iu trade and val ue of property would soon repay us for the ou'lay. The rain which tell last Sunday night is only an advance guard of the com ing fall rains, which we cannot and do not hope to escape, and which, when they have once sot in, will, unless their work is cut short by early and heavy frosts, reduce our roads agaiu to the condition which prevailed last spring. To prevent this our citizens should give the matter their earnest atten lion. F.lforts have been made dttring the past week, to organise a singing school, but of two teachers who put forward their claims, it is not yet entirely decided which will receive the patronage of the place.
