THURSDAY JANUARY 26 1S93
A MOOD
All the world is wrapped In shadow
All my fought Is steeped in gray
Sweet and wanton sadness holds me
And enfolds me
As the arms ol night the day
Sweet as pulsing ol spent music
When the hands have ceased to play
Oer the sense a longing stealetb
For what cause it may not know
As when evening groweth tender
And the splendor
Of the sunset burneth low
Oer the land the white mist silent
Stealeth through the after glow
Sad as slanting sunlight falling
On the sails of outbound ships
Dear as memory that hovers
Of a lovers
Kisses on a womans lips
Soft as when a thin cloud mantle
Folds the moon in while eclipse
So the sense is steeped in longing
As the world is wrapped in gray
Tis so much akin to sorrow
As the morrow
Holdeth thought of yesterday
Tis perchance the soul immortal
Sad because the heart is clay
OF INTEREST TO FARMERS
FEED OF DRV COWS
The old notion that a cow not
giving milk can be starved through
the winter then be a good milker
the next season has had its day
If a cow is thin when she calves
she will give poor milk in quality
unless the cow is fed enough to
fatten her
CLOVER FOR FOWLS
Chopped clover is in winter a
good supplementary food for hens
In summer they always eat a great
deal of grass but in winter when
grass cannot be had they become
crop bound from an exclusive grain
ration A sowing of grain just to
be eaten off in warm spells during
the winter is also advisable
KEEPING HOCS IN BARNYARDS
Many farmers winter their hogs
in the barnyard stabling and feed
ing in their stalls or feeding rooms
of other animals It is a good
practice especially when whole
grain is fed to either cattle or
horses The grain is never per
fectly digested and without hogs
to work over the excrement much
of its value is lost The hog ma
nure also makes the other with
which it is mixed more valuable
EFFECT OF TRAMPLING GROUND
The trampling of cultivated
ground even to the extent needed
to cultivate it decreases its pro
ductiveness In some English ex
periments iu plowing by steam
power with stationary engines at
each side of the field drawing the
plow back and forth the yield was
much greater than on land where
the plowing was done by horses
the latter trampling the soil and
thus compacting it too much for
the best growth of the crops
FEW STOCK HUT CHOICE
It is not the number of animals
a man owns but in their produc
tiveness that the farmers wealth
consists We read in olden times
of the wealth of individuals who
like Job numbered camels asses
and other animals by the thousand
But probably Jobs entire wealth
would not buy a thoroughbred cow
or horse to day and as the result
proved it was quite as uncertain
for him to keep as large a number
with less value would have been
THROWING FEED TO HENS
One of the reasons why hens lay
more eggs in summer than in win
ter season they are dependent on
themselves They cannot eat so
fast as they do when fed by hand
Having food placed before them in
large quantities they gorge them
selves until digestion is injured
In a field they pick here one in
sect there a seed and again a
worm Thus at no time do they
have a chance to glut themselves
We knew a successful poulterer
who would give his fowls only one
ear of corn per day and he owned
39 or 40 This he slowly shelled
and threw a half dozen grains at a
time Probably no fowl received
more than three or four grains
The remainder of the ration was
oats so mixed with cut straw
on the floor of their breeding place
that it kept the fowls busily engag
ed all day in securing it
HANDLING APPLES GENTLY
Much of the ability of apples and
other fruit to withstand decay de
pends on preserving not only the
skins from being cut or bruised
but from the injury that follows
the removal of the natural bloom
which it has on the tree Some
handling is necessary but to in
sure long keeping it should be as
little and as gentle as possible
This suggests a doubt whether the
patented apple gatherers may not
be too rough for fruit that is of the
choicest quality and that must be
kept a long time Most of them
shake the fruit from the tree let 1
ting it fall through branchos and of
course bruising some into a can
vas down which the fruit is rolled
to the foot of the tree No matter
how carefully this is done fruit
that is kept all winter or sent
across the ocean can be picked
more carefully by hand But the
practical question is will it be
Help that does things as carciuliy
as the owner of an orchard would
like is hard to find in these days
Chills and Feitr
Torpid action of the liver is usually the
the cause of chills and fever Calomel ir
ritates the liver and induces temporary ac
tivity Carlstcdt s German Liver i owaer
stimulates the action of the liver by impart
ing strength and and also acts on the lower
bowels expelling foul accumulations A
cure accomplished by this treatment is per
manent The best way to cure chills and
fever is to prevent them This can be done
by taking German Liver Powder every few
days during tue malarial season or when
ever ou feel bilious Irice 23c at Robin
