Valuable Throush iha arencv of
Jian Relics Col Robl Wood Mr
I B Atkinson secured
a lot of the best preserved and most inter
esting aboHghal relics last Monday even
ing It appears that Mm Sisk of near
Nortonvllle noticed in a gulley that was
formed In a field near her house some
thing that presented the appearance of a
pot Procuring a hoe she soon unearthed
a large vessel of Indian pottery filled with
shells implements ornaments and a large
quantity ot aboriginal currency known as
wampum which consisted of shells cylin
drical in form about half an Inch in diam
eter and an Inch and a half in length worn
perfectly smooth from long andactive cir
culation The shells ibelongedlofdifferent
varieties of the conch family Some of
them had been transiormedjlnto drinking
vessels by cutting away in a neat manner
a portion ot the voluted par of the shell
and removing its interior structure and form
ing a dipper of more than a pint capacity
Two ot these slippers were adapted to
right hand use and a third was foimed 0
meet the requirements of left handed
parties An ornament was formed of a
circular concave piece of shell about four
and one half inches in diameter Its centre
was pierced by a hole of an inch and one
fourth diameter
But the most interesting and artistic or
nament consisted of a circular shell of four
inches diameter with a perfectly scalloped
edge upon the concave surface of itiwas
drawn seieral regular concentric circle
Between the largest of these circles at
regular intervals apart are eight well de
fined circles of half an inch diameter
Intervening between each of these is a
cluster of dots symmetrically arranged and
thirteen In each cluster Within the third
and fourth lines is a circle of semicircular
holes sixteen in number equally spaced
and cleanly cut the Inner circle is perfor
ated with three long curved slats This Is
by far the most Interesting relic ever found
In this country Its beauty and finish
commands admiration while its probable
use gives rise t6 much speculation
It Is passing strange that those sufficient
ly skilled to form almost without tools
the amount of such symmetric proportions
as to excite the wonder of skillful educated
artisan could be satisfied with and endure
the hardships incidental to savage life
when bad the ingenuity and skill herein
dlsptajed been properly directed their
condition would have been greatly ame
liorated and other evidences than this
mute testimony of human vanity would be
left in the sands of time to testify of the
existence and skill ot their prehistoric
former
