Guiteau's head and face are preserved
in alcohol in the Medical Museum lat
"Washington.
The President is s.tid to be considering
the propriety of removing the new Commissioner
of Internal Revenue.
Secbetauy Chandler has issued orders
lor the reduction of expenses at all the
navv vards in the United States.
Latku advices from Southern Nebraska
indicate that a large area of country was
inundated and many lives were lost.
It is estimated that the revenues of the
Government for the fiscal year about to
close, will be $10,000,000 less than during
the preceding year.
The barbed wire fence monopoly has
been wiped out, the United States Circuit
Court of Missouri having decided that
the present manufacturers have not the
exclusive right to make it. This is good
news for the fanner.
Senatck Colqimtt, of Georgia, is exuberantly
generous to " the literary
" down South. Recently he presented
u home and farm to a Southern poet
and now he has presented a thousand
dollar span of horses to Editor Grady, of
the Atlanta Constitution.
There is an encouraging etop project
through Southern Indiana. The b.irley
harvest is progressing and some fields of
wheat will be cut in a week: The yield
of wheat will be above the average, and
the barley is twenty per cent, better than
was supposed. The corn fields are clean,
and promise well.
The Pension List, to be published by
order of Cong) ess, will make a work of
4,500 pages. It will contain a Hit of the
pensioners, their post office address, the
amount allowed in each caso and the
reason why. A list of each county
will be furnished to the papers of that
county and publshed by them.
The following in defense of the English
spanow is ftom tho Philadelphia
Evening Telegraph : Anfesteemed contemporary,
in its zeal to make out a case
against the English sparrow, overreaches
itself and shows the falsity of the chatge
that the bird has become the terror of
the farmers throughout the State. It is
ascertained, and reluctantly confessed,
that the alleged destroyer of crops is
practically unknown thirty or forty miles
from this pity, and within that radius
sonio sonsiblo farmers actually feed tho
birds in winter. A lot of very silly stuir,
purporting to bo the indignant expression
of agrieultuibts, is published, but one
indiscreet sufferer" explains a great
mystery. It has been charged that the
sparrows ' ravage tho wheat fields."
How this is possible is a problem intelligent
observers have failed to solve. The
sparrow cannot reach the lofty kernel
from tho ground ; the slender stalk can
notbearhis weight and he cannot pick out
the grain on tho wing. When it is cut and
put in stacks ho can only pick around
tho outside. This agriculturalist Jeremiah,
however, says it is when tho wheat
" breaks down " tlrnt tho marauder gels
his work in. And how much of tho crop
" breaks down ?".A very Jlittle, indeed.
Tho statement is simply another proof
that tho enemies of tho sparrow indulge
more in imagination thanfact in ther
senseless warfare.

the country, but there is nothing to induce
a man to stay there. Traders use leather

every ship by tbo hundreds, and a majority
of them have no money to get nway on
Theio is no chance there to work. A man

A large metal plate attachod to an insulated
conductor is lowered from the ship to the
bottom on the track of' the cable, nnd
mother plito is merely submerge'd. Between
these two plates a battory and Morse
key is inserted. On working tho key the
Morse currents induce other currents in
the cable, whioli can bo heard in telephones

Small Farms Pa.v Hest.
Tho Governor of Florida reports that
the tendency of tho agriculturists, of that
State is toward Binalf farms. The richest
New York fanners are those who
have grown berties and added every
year an acre or two to their pear orchards
and the most profitable farms of all aro
those within a few miles of this city,
and whose managers bank considerable
money yearly from the sale of vegetables
grown on a lew acres that aro hired at
$300 per acre per annum. One man who
bought an up-river farm of twenty-three
acres, twenty years ago, has for veins avenged
87,000 yearly on tho yield of pear
trees that ho planted himself. Kut tho
American farmer gt)ncrally seems to imagine
that humanity need's only wheat,
corn and pork, so he attempts to rui&o
these on a largo scale, while tho vegetables
and fruits on his own table are purchased
at high prices in city markets.
The farmer should eat somo hing besides
meat and bread. X. Y. Herald.
