. TO THE RESCUE. Th Chnniplon OnrMiiHn (Jnllnntljr Itcicuci Four Drowning Men. Nkw Youk, July 223. Edward llnnlan, tho champion, wlia arrived in this city Saturday, wan thj hero of an cxcif inir episode on Harlem river yesterday about noon. Four men. somewhat under tno ititiueiicu of liquor, woro rowing about tho river in a boat opposite tho Metropolitan boat-house Their unties caused tho boat to capsize, and tho four rowers were tlouudoring about in the water. Hunlan, who was tho uuost of the Metropolitan club, hud been in swim ming, and hit attention was attracted by the cries of the lour men in the water. Tho ohatnpion at once jumped in a gig and grasped a pair of oars. A few of his long, powertul sweeps biottght him alongside the capsized boat, where the young men were making desperate eilortd to keop up until thoir rescuer approachod. It required all of Haitian's exertions to keep the men from capsizing his boat in their efforts to clumber into it. He finally succeeded in persuading them to hold ou to the sides of the boat while he rowed back to the bout-house. The mon wore completely exhausted, and but for tho timoly rescuo by Hanlun their day's frolic must have onded fatally. Tho champion was loudly applauded by those who witnossed his heioism. The young men disappeared without giving names or cyeu thanking their rescuer. ilAEKETS BY TELEGRAPH. Cincinnati, July 23. In all the chief cities tho situation ou 'change has assumed a very serious condition. No St. Louis, Chicago, Now York, or New Orleans market reports were interchanged on account of tho strike of the Western Union market reporters. Reports icccived were all privato dispatches, and these very meagre, largely tailing to give tho truo situation. Chicago wheat opened jo higher, but dropped jo within an hour. Corn opened half a cent up, and . sustained itself. Lard firm at yesterday's quotations. Cincinnati markets wcro firm, but very littlo local business was transacted. Tho most reckless speculator is afraid to invest a dollar in the present threatening condition of business utiairs. Ou account of the delay of dispatches men in Cincinnati dealing in Chicago margins have loBt very heavily. At present thero are 20,000,000 bushels of now wheat moving. Not a bushel hasgreached Now York. Tho only Western Union operator on 'Chango horo refused to leceivo mossages, for the reason that they were butchered so much at tho main oflice, that he could not do business men justice Thero is a feeling of intenso bitterness felt by prominent business men against Uouid. Tho facilities of tho American Press Association arc, however, unaffected. i Ocnpral Mnrkcts. Cincinnati, July 23.
