To day the pleasant summer vacation comes to a close, and the whining trudge unwillingly to school. As they grow in years, however, they will regret the lost or neglected opportunities of their youth ; since among adults, it is only the ignorant, the prejudiced, the hopelessly stupid that despise the knowledge and the mental discipline, that are derived from books. In this enlightened country, where a career is open to the humblest, there is no assured success without the culture of the schools ; and the competitions of life are daily becoming so close and sharp that the struggle l'or existence is very desperate to all except those who endowed with native energy, are likewise armed with all the resources of modern knowledge. Do not despise books. They embody the concentrated experience of the past. Other things being equal, more can be accomplished with book knowledge than without it. But will it help us to make money? Perhaps some pnigmalie.il village Plutus will s iv " No "because, in spite of his own defective education, he has managed to heap together, by hard plodding and cloe saving, a few thousands of filthy lucie. But let us not forget that the greatest money makers of our time were carefully educated men. Mr. A. T. Stewart, the famous " merchant prince," to the latest hour of his life, amused his leisure with the Latin classics; and Jiy Gould, the most brilliant and successful of American financiers, found his evening recreation in teaching the dead languages to his sons. It is well known that the Rothschilds are distinguished for their accomplishments in the highest circles of European social life. It is too late in the day in this latter hull of the 10th century to sneer ut the " book lurnin." Make this dead knowledge of the " b o!;s " live (tijaln by your intelligent application of it, and money will flow into your coffers in inexhaustible Mreams. The petty hoarder feels every day of his life that his ignorance is a bar to his financial success. Does ho wish to invest in mining operations? He knows nothing of the conditions which insure success in an undertaking that must utilize the latest discoveries of science an art. Does ho wish to " realize " on an investment in electric light? The same objections will again arise. In fact, scarcely an industrial enterprise can bo named which does not demand at least a slight acquaintance with the elements of physical science modern chemistry, for example, entering into industrial processes of every sort, Irom the freezing of ice to the baking of bread. But a good deal of this expressed contempt for "learning" is palpably affected. The very old curmudgeon who bo.tsts that ho made his little pile without the assistance of the schools, is immensely gratified when his own son carries oil' a prizo at the village academy ; and, on the strength of this modest success, is induced to give his boy advantages of the scholastic sort that disqualify him for every practical vocation under the sun. He convorts him into a conceited idler and drono. The learning of tho schools ia a useful helper to success, but it is not a substitute forenorgy, industry, prudence and native good sonso. Conjoined with these qualities, however, it is simply invincible. Give your boys an education but teach thorn also to turn to a practical account. CUUNTY POINTS. HILLSDALE, HKACKEN COUNTY.
