girl had forbidden her to keep the young manV
company When church was out the father
lay in wuit behind a tree for his daughters

passed He beiied the young man by the
throat and torn his collar off and the bosom
out of his shirt The old gentleman then ran
nway The doctor went on home with tie

When she entered the house her father
took her to tho parlor and pointed to the

the wall
1 intend to have it framed ho said

Currie General Agent submitted his re
port which among other things says
The first work of the fund was to aid in
tho establishment of a public school system
That being unalterably accomplished tho ob
vious duty now is to look after the character
of the schools and so direct your helpful ap
propriations as to co opperote most efficiently
in making them better It is gratifying that
public sentiment having boon won to the fa
vor of free schools is now logically directed to
their elevation which is of course to be
wrought through the agency of better teach
ing
The report then speaks highly of tho im
provements in the public schools normal
schools and teachers institutes all over the
broad field where the fund operates Hamp
ton Normal School and tho Agricultural In
stitute of Virginia says the report is al
most anomaly in educational work Its suc
cess has been extraordinary An important
change in tho course of study is to be tried
Hereafter each class will be sent out for one
year teaching or other practical work It is
thought that after a year of real livo work
the 6tudent will come back with valuable ex
perience and new purpose
