Young of tho Ken tucky Division, U. 0. V is in Mayaville this week soliciting aid for the Kentucky Confederate Homo at Pewee Valley. Ho is being assisted in his mission by Judge Wall and other Confederate veterans of this city. The homo was established by the Legislature. In a lettor to Judge Wall, Major General Young explains the causes leading to the present condition of affairs and the necessity to solicit popular donations' for maintaining the institution. He says: "When this home was organized we supposed that fifty men would be all that would need its benefits. We have now had 151 admissions, seventeen deaths, two sent to insane asylums and ono dismissal. "About one-fifth of these men came from poor houses in Kentucky, or sim ilar institutions. The result wbb when they came they all had to be clothed, and there was nothing to do but put the whole number of inmates in the Confed erate uniform. This cost ua nearly $4, 000. Our first quarter's pay was $2,500. The men were in rags and in Buch condi tion that nobody was willing to have them enter the home until they were better clothed. We found also instead of providing for fifty people we had to provide for 150; buy cots, bed clothing and other things for which the State made no provision. We fouud also that instead of having a home we have noth ing but a big infirmary. The ages of the men range from fifty-eight to ninety four, the average age being seventy-one years. We are going to ask the State to increaso our per capita and build an in firmary, as about one-fourth of the men will be in the infirmary all the time. "Nobody conceived of the great neces sity for this homo until it was founded. It was one of the greatest benefactions and noblest charities ever created. "We will ask our friends to help us until the meeting of the Legislature, and then we can secure, no doubt, a larger per capita, and also the necessary fund to build an infirmary, which we badly need. For any courtesies shown- Maj r Lawson we will be obliged " i Armour's canned meats Calhoun's. Ladies of the Christian Church will give an ice cream and watermelon social at Mrs. Joe D.
