BOY WITH A BASEBALL.
He Started a Riot in Which Four Men
Were Wounded.
New York, 'June 0. A boy with a
baseball started a riot near Pier 42,
iNorth river, late Sunday as the result
of "which four Italians received bullet
wounds and were taken to the hospital
and 14 of their countrymen are under
arrest
1 The boy threw the ball at a group of
,150 Italian coal passers who were leav
ing the pier and It struck one of the
men. The Italian drew a stiletto and
ran after the boy, but was caught by
a policeman. The Italians then knock
ed tho officer down and beat him until
other policemen charged the crowd.
Italians and police then drew revolvers
and in the shooting that followed four
Italians were wounded.
The Bear Badly Damaged.
San Francisco, Juno C. The United
States revenue cutter Bear, which. left
here June 2, has been sighted five
miles south of tho Farralon islands.
The vessel has lost her foremast and
part of her main mast, and her sails
are spread on tho deck.
Freight Handlers Strike.
San Francisco, June 6. Freight
handlers at tho Third and Townsend
street station of the Southern Pacific
Co. to the number of 500 have gone on
strike. The men demand an increase
of pay and a reduction of tho working
day to nine hours.
. Liberty Bell In Milwaukee.
Milwaukee, June 0. Liberty bell
reached Milwaukee Sunday on a spe
cial train over tho Chicago, Milwaukee
& St. Paul railroad on schedule time at
8 a. m. and was viewed during its stay
of about two and one-half hours by
thousands.

Paris, June C. Tho St. Petersburg
correspondent of the Echo de Paris
says: "According to Information re
ceived here Gen. Kuroki has been suf
fering from a mild attack of typhus fe
ver, but ho has now recovered."
To Curtail Expenses.
New Haven, Ct, June C. It was
stated here Sunday night in order to
curtail expenses, owing to the depres
sion in trade, four of the large steel
plants in this city would lay off 2,000
men on July 1.
St. Louis, June G. The recorded ad
missions' to the World's fair 'for the
week ending Saturday June 4 aggre
gate 378,140. Thus far last week show
ed the heaviest attendance of any at
the exposition.
More Stealing at the Fair.
St. Louis, June 0. It has been learn
ed that gold and precious jewels to
tho value of ?1,000 have been stolen
from the German colonial exhibit sec
tion of the palace of the agriculture at
the World's fair.
