To rag or not to rag. that is the question. The Sacramento cltv council . •. ly passed nn ordinance prohibit nrr ragging within the city limits. No mat , ter what one might think about rag ging he must think that the counc i which passed such a law should be teaching Sunday school. Such esthetic perfection is seldom associated in the vulgar mind with city councllmen. T.et us imagine Nome's city fathers ris ing in their righteous wrath against this diabolical elaboration of the sa cred two step and we shall have con jured a picture of those whom the gods would destroy hut first drive mad. Why does that infernal ragging give rise to such morality spasms, any how'.' What is right about It or what Is wrong about it If there were anything really wrong about it the better people would never cnntonnnee it, much less practice it; and If it were good and proper it would have died out long ago, for It has nothing else in its favor but the suggestion of "dlvllment" which .t seems, to tell the truth, to have ob tained under false pretenses. Ragging cannot be said to posses* the saintly grace of the minuet or the grandmotherly purity of the cotillion. Indeed its name seems to situ it as perfectly as the word Tlowery seem* to suit a certain portion of New York. Hut, if that is all that can be suid against it, there is hnrdlv any reason why city councilmrn should butt in. I.ike ordinary- human beings they might lie amongst tile tirst to give \v »y to the temptation and to cuss the fate that had retarded the education of their pedal extremities. Anyhow such dances as ragging seem to be matters which should lie left to individual choice. They n®, not be pastimes for the esthete but they can hardly be called awful crimes. A newspaper published In the iute rior of Alaska reprinted the story from the Nugget that the Nome liar Association had recommended a law making slander a misdemeanor, and the same newspaper commented on th' story by stating that matters lo r must be pretty warm. That was an exceedingly silly re-] mark that could only have been 111.ul' l.v n mnn whfton montnl nnftnnlf i limited by petty and local consider.! tions, or whose dislike for Nome o. . . eiiinc his inclination to talk sense. Ii would probably he hard b> get a man like that to believe that anv local application which such a !'• >■ ommendatlon might have would eon slst in showing that Nome people more than any others desire to stop such a practice as slander. For a town of Its size there Is probably not In the world a population more gen •tour a people more Inclined to spea’, well about their neighbors. i if course one hears uncharitable re marks. or hasty remarks, from time to time. This is unavoidable where all the people are so well known to each other and you will hear the same, on’v to a greater extent, in everv small town on earth. How often do we hear il said that “this is an awrul town. You e.an't turn sideways without having every body talk about you." Go to any other town of about euuai size and you will hear the very same sentence spoken almost every day of your life. Why. that phrase is the very motto of small towns. One town Is Just the same •i“ the other, except In a case like Nome's whose people have all traveled enough to become more broadminded than those who live in older towns. WOMEN’S PART IN THE WILSON CAMPAIGN. mara .«ntuenrnip or .Mrs. J. Jorden Ilurriman, the democratic wo men of the country have made a dis tinct contribution to contemporary politics. Mrs. Harriman's bureau at the dem ocratic national headquarters i unique in the spirit and method of its work. While- it has not despised the immediate vote-getting aim that . ■ tuatex all political campaigning. It has made its appeal on broader ground of humanity than politicians—even very liberal and progressive politicians are accustomed to. The work has pro ceeded on the assumption that the coming of women Into politics means the inauguration of a new kind of politics—a politics that cares less for abstract questions of policy and more for the concrete things of human health and happiness. If women in politics are merely go ing to debate the old Issues that men have debated for generations, then the adv.nt of the women means nothing hut to increase the number of debat ers. It lias been the hope of those who expect most from the women’s move ment that they will broach new and profounder issues—Issues less intellec The Daily Nttgget J Job Printing Department 9 I Business Stationery Cards, Letter Heads, Bill Heads.
