Jx. ■ Accord ing to a statement made by the de patrment of agriculture there are over thirty thousand reindeer in Alaska which are already domesticated and the department will at once take stringent measures and Issue regula tions which will prevent the destruc tion of these animals. The propogatkm of the reindeer in Alaska is to he encouraged l*y every possible means by the department and It is the desire of the department I > have these animals increased to many times the present size of the herds. The department recognizes that tin future of the Eskimo depends large ly upon the reindeer industry and h will try to keep the native steadily at the work of raising and protecting these animals for transportation pur poses as well a.(t for food. It litis been said that the propogation of the rein deer and the use of the meat of these animals for food may ia time he an element in the reduction of the cost o* living. While it is the present intention of the department to confine the raising nt reindeer entirely to the Eskimo of A'aska there is a movement on foot which is constantly growing strong"!* t > allow the white man to share i-i this industry which promises to in lime liecomc ili*<-hledl> Im-ret iv»\ I in i are many while men who would en gage in the business of raising rein deer for boasts of burden ns well as foi food and it is recognized by tin department that there is a large held epen in this direction. However tli <h partment fears, and with good rea son that the minute the white sot - tier takes up the management of tin herds the native will be pushed out of the only business which hi can handle with profit to himself.
