tUSTRO-CEBMtNS CAPTURE 2 IT All AW CITIES
TEUTONS GAIN MIGHTY
VICTORY OVER ITALIANS
8y Associated Pres*.
, LONDON, Oct. i!t.—Sweeping down
ward through the mountain passes
along the Italian boundary into the
plains of I'Ytuli. the combined Austro*
Gorman armies have captured the
Italian cities of C'ivladale and Gcor
gias and are sweeping steadily onward
toward the Italian military base at
I'ndine, capturing thousands of Ital
ian prisoners and guns in their vic
torious progress, according to the ofii
cial report sent out by Rcrlin today.
Tiie (Jerman General Staff reports
that the entire Italian line along tiie
Isivnza is now threatened with annihil
ation and tiie fall of Gorizia, which
the I ihans gained only after two
years f the most dosperatp fighting,
is soil isly menacing tiie Italian forces
hold ip the Carso line running1 south
ward io tiie Adriatic.
In their victorious rush, the Ger
mans have captured more than one
hundred thousand prisoners and have
also taken a total of seven hundred
guns.
The Teuton victory is apparently
complete and overwhelming. To
further add to the seriousness of the
situation tiie Teutons have now reach
ed a point where they may strike with
ease at a half dozen or more import
ant points in northeastern Italy.
Judging from the reports reaching
here the Italians insistence is com
pletely hrokon. and the Oadorna for
ces are retiring steadily before the
overwhelming weight of the Austro
German advance, although lighting
desperately to stem the Ude of defeat,
in the opinion of military critics, the
defeat of the Italians is due to the
same causes as precipitated the great
reverse sustained in the Tmntino sec
tion during the first year of the llal
iun entrance into the war, namely the
failure to fortify the territory captur
ed hi the recent great advance along
the Halnsizza plateau, before attempt
ing further advances. It is pointejl
out that the Italians pressed steadily
onward east of Halnsizza in pursuit of
the retiring Austrians following tin*
capture of Monte San Garbiello and
apparently neglected to take the pro
per precautions against a return of
fensive, with the result that the pre
sent Austro-German advance caught
them entirely unprepared to sustain a
weighty offensive.
Tlio unexpected debacle is causing
the most serious concern in military
circles owing to the fear that the
Teutons will completely shatter the
j Italian insistence, thereby releasing
j the greater part of the Austrian forces
'for service on the western lines.
LABOR CONSCRIPTION AN
IMMINENT PROSPECT
By Associated Press.
■ WASHINGTON, Oct. 20.—Unless
(he present labor shortage in the var
ious ’industries engaged in the govern
ment war preparations is relieved im
mediately the officials say it will be
absolutely necessary for the govern
ment to consider drastic methods of
conscripting workmen to prevent the
development of a most serious situa
tion. •
The need for workmen is especially
apparent in the shipyards engaged on
government construction and the first
move toward the impressment of labor
would be directed toward supply
ing the help necessary to carry the
shipping program to completion. Ow- I
ing to the long continued strikes, the!
ship building program is far beh'md
ttie contemplated schedule and will
l>c seriously delayed no matter what
measures may be taken.

announcement given out by Hood Ad

In order to accomplish the desired
object in the most effective manner
it is the intention to strike at ' the
speculative evil directly through the
producers by placing all food canner

a prohibition which will prevent them
from making future wiles of canned

Tlie Imminent necessity of speeding
up ship construction was especially
emphasized at a conference between
the Atlantic coast shipbuilders and
the officers of the emergency fleet cor
poration held here Saturday when it
was shown that the delays in con
struction are due almost entirely to
the shortage of labor. A conference
