HOME CITY FAULT FINDERS Some cities have a lot of men who spend half their time finding fault with every bit of progressive work that is being done for their city. This crowd never do anything themselves lowara doosx, ing their city, but spend their time finding fault with the rest of the world in general and the home city in particular. Another crowd is a bunch of business men who think they can keep in business by “kidding” themselves into thinking their stores are so well known that business will come to them anyway. They might as well look facts in the face. If they want business, they must go after it—and business is never so good that it can’t be made better. The crowd that puts in most of their time talking about rotten business usually get it. Boosters who go after business with united effort usual ly get it. Boosting better business for the home city pays divi dends. That one of the ways to make your city prosperous is to BUY AT HOME. You should read the advertisements. You should buy advertised goods. When you buy at home you can see the goods you buy. The firms of your city stand behind the goods they advertise. If your community is good enough for you to live in, it is good enough for you to spend your money in. Your home city is where you earn your money. Keep your money circulating in your own home city. The advertising columns are your market place. It will save you time and money to read them carefully. The up-to-date merchandiser advertisers. Patronize him. And you Mr. Business man should not complain about people sending out side for good^ unless you keep your money circulating in Nome, and not send outside for things that can be obtained in your own city. Those critics of the President’s monetary policy who are demanding a sound dollar haven’t yet realized that money makes no noise with the New Deal. The Indians, first to arrive, found a land so fair and fertile that they abandoned their roving ways and settled in the valleys and canyons of the streams that flowed from the high sierras. They cultivated corn and other crops, the gift of the red man to the white race. In course of time, they developed an admirable form of government and a colorful culture which reached its climax a thousand years ago in the Chaco Canyon, in northwestern New Mexico, where the ruins of five and six story communal houses and huge sun temples still excite the wonderment of every visi tor. “Then came the white men upon the scene, seeking a Golconda in the Seven Cities of Cibola, eighty years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. These Spanish ad venturers sought gold and souls. Of the former they found little; for the latter, more than fifty Franciscans suffered martyrdom. As far east as Kansas, the disappointed Span ish conquerors made their way, little direaming that New Mexico after all was a land of untold riches and resources. “Fifty years later came the Spanish colonists and plant ed the seeds of European culture and Christianity in the valley of the Rio Grande. Since that date in 1598, when the first permanent settlement was established, wave upon wave of newcomers have taken hold of the land and have slowly uncovered its wealth. “The southernmost of the states that sit astride the Continental Divide, New Mexico became the crossroads of commerce between the Atlantic and the Pacific, and be tween the United States and Latin America to the south. Here the Argonauts, who made their way to California, found welcome and rested along the way. With them came the pathfinders and pioneers, who gave a new touch to the culture which had been established by the Indian and the Spaniard. It was a slow process, but from the melting pot of races, tribes and nationalities there came forth the pres ent New Mexico, the most colorful of the forty-eight states of the Union.”—Exchange. WE SOLICIT YOUR ACCOUNT The Bolcom-Canal Lumber Co. “DON’T TRY TO PROVE THAT THE MAN WITH A NEW IDEA IS WRONG. HELP HIM PROVE HE IS RIGHT.” .The old saying: “Adversity Makes Us All Akin”, was never more vividly exemplified than during and since the calamity experienced by Nome’s citizenry just a few short weeks ago. At the height of the conflagration, when the fire demon was devouring everything in sight, everyone forgot past diff erences as well as personal safety and gave his efforts and strength for the assistance and protection of his neighbor. What an ideal city Nome will build into if this consid erate spirit is perpetuated. It can be. It is simply a community demonstration of the old “GOLDEN RULE”. If there were no better or higher reward offered for such a utopia, the advertisement in itself would be profitable for Nome would soon become known and famous as “THE MODEL CITY”, and it moral credit fixed at the highest rating.
