STORM LAST NIGHT WAS A BAD ONE the storm, with some buildings still remaining in inverted posi tions, due to theid foundations being swept out from under. Several buildings disappeared completely, after their occupants had moved out. The street at the East end was washed out and no longer was contact possible by motor truck. Debris Piled About Front Street, and the Nome main business section was pile-d with drift wood, splintered re mains of bulkheads and the rear walls of several buildings, which took a terrific beating. The Lincoln Hotel, the only large hostelry in Nome since the big fire which swept Nome in 1934. was vactated, as collapse was ex pected at any lime. Th etotal stock of liquor of the Lincoln dis pensary, was lost, as was the mod «rn heating plant just recently installed. The rear of the build ing broke off and the expected damage will total some $20,000 or more. 7 No Lives Lost After a careful check, both on the Sandspit opposite the river and thruout the rest of town no lives were lost several people were injured by collapsing of buildings but not seriously. Prominent townspeople, espec ially those whose buildings are withstanding successfully the beating of the seas, which are breaking over bulkheads, recall • with chagrin and regret, the fail ure of attempts to interest United States Engineers a year ago, in a project to build a steel revetment the entire length of Front Street on the beach side of Bering Sea, from the Jetties to East of the Lomen Commercial Company I jocks, about three or four thous and fett. Failure Get Revetment A.n attempt was made then to gain the approval of such a pro ject. but was turned down. Should Be An Aid Chamber of Commerce and City officials said: “I hope this will be sufficient evidence to bring about plans for a definite survey to ward the possible construction next summer, as Nome is badly in need of such revetment, as en tire business district has aLways been menaced by late storms. Erosion of sands during the past, two years wiped out all remains of former sites of buildings be fore the 1934 fire, when Front street was moved several feet north) to provide as much as pos sible for such emergency. Eye of Storm Passed At eleven A.M. today, the wea ther Bureau here, reported that the “eye" of the storm passed di rectly over Nome, headed north east by east, dark clouds with quickening of intensity followed close behind by clear spot. Me teorologist Ross Dobbs predicted storm area would not entirely pass Nome within the next 36 to 48 hours. Wind velocity last night at midnight reached thirty. Barometer at present rising about ten h undredths every three hours very slow. Wind direction of storm, veering from southeast to south southeast, indicating, says weather bureau, that storm, prob ably h>e in southwest tonight whi ch brings unusually high water. $200,000 Damages Estimate of damage was raised to approximately two hundred thousand dollars as “from relia ble business sources. Seas still running high although intensity diminished considerable since early morning, however, indica tions are that storm will pick up late this afternoon or evening. Men are working constructing temporary bulkheads during the slack'll p in the storm today, pre ! paring for any possible increase tonight. Warns of Danger The Weather Bureau is warning people on south side of street that tail end of storm which is now coming Nomeward, may be just as severe as the beginning, so be prepared.
