E. ORLANDER succkssok to GEORGE THE JEWELER t' NEW WAGE SCHEDULE GOING INTO EFFECT ON U. S. R. R. APRIL FIRST Wages on the government railroad i arc to be readjusted according to a re cent announcement by Captain Mears, the adjustment to be based on the actual increase in cost of living as ! shown by the commission mess halls. The new scale will go into effect April 1. During the past year, according to Captain Mears the mess halls have been operated at a loss, therefore the charge for meals are to be increased and to equalize the burden it is prob able that the wage scale will be in j creased to meet the added charge for meals. Captain Mears’ circular on the sub ject follows: TO ALL CONCERNED: The following announcement is made for the information of alt con cerned : After careful investigations and the exercise of economy co npatible with | the best interests of our employees, it has been found that wuh the pres ent rate of charges for meals served to employees the mess halls of the commission, without exccptic n, have i been operated at considerable lo$s. | and it is obviously imperative, with | the view of placing Lhis service on a self-supporting basis, tha* an adjust ment be made and the charges in creased to cover the cost. Therefore, in order not only to equalize the increase in the charges for this sendee, but also to the end that different employees of the com mission may be placed on a rating commensurate with the skill and ex perience required to fill their respec tive sitions, a readjustment of the present wage scale becomes neces sary, and the scale adopted for the season’s work will be made public in the Alaska Railroad Record, and be comes effective April 1, 1917. This matter was brought to the ut tention of the Honorable Franklin V. Lane, secretary of the interior, durng our recent conference in Washington, and after a thorough discussion of the subject his approval and consent weu obtained in the action 1 am now tak ing. F. ALL SELDOVIA BUT FIVE WANT BURGINNAMED Busy on Lower Inlet in AH Lines; After New Postmaster SELDOVIA, March 22.—(Mail cor rcspondence.)—The petition to have Dr. Frank Burgin appointed post master of the Seldovia postoflfice proves him to be a very popular man. The steamer “Tyonic” will be put in the water for the summer’s coal business on the spring tides about March 24.
