SENSIBILITIES DULLED BY WAR NEWS STANDARDS It would have i>een a difficult undertaking, thirty months ago, to convince the average American that the time would ever come when he could pick up his news paper and calmly read that a liner, with hundreds aboard,1 had been torpedoed and sunk without warning. It would have been hard to make him believe that he would ever reach a place where, from a purely humane standpoint—regardless of where the technical right might lie, whether the boat should have sailed or the people should have been on it or not—he would view such an oc currence almost without emotion of any kind, except in so far as it might contain possibilities of involving the j United States in trouble. Yet that is about the mental attitude in which many Americans, probably the great majority, receive the news of the sinking of vessels todav. Vet we are not much to blame. The whole civilized world is in about the same situation. So terrible have been the events of war. so frequent its reversions to bar barism. that the mind has been dulled by the successive shocks. The sensibilities have been deadened, the capacity for grasping events in the light of peace-time standards has been lost. We are seeing things through the smoke of battle. Ten years from now, when we look back on the nightmare, we shall wonder at the indifference with which we passed through these terrible events. It is one of the amazing phenomena of the great war. Even though Villa never proclaimed a regime of ruthlessness, we doubt if his morals are on straight.—! (Dallas News.) | C. M. PETTIBONE Packers* l>irect Selling Agent SALT SALMON. HERRING.
