To do their part in the movemenl for the conservation of the nation * time and resources, the women of tho highest official families will omit thi usual formal entertaining and calling and reduce to the minimum their so cial activties, so they can give mor* time and money to constructive pro paredness and relief work. They agreed to pledge themselves to buy in expensive clothing, simple food and to watch and prevent all kinds of waste. PARENTS OBJECTED TO ENLISTMENT SO HE TRIES SUICIDE THE DALLES, Or., April Klzie Young, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. R. I. Young, of this- city, at tempted suicide last night by drink ing carbolic acid because his parents I refused to allow him to join the navy. The young man had witnessed the enlistment of several of his friends and, desiring to follow their ♦ sample, ho asked his parents, to allow him to join by signing a permit, hi their re fusal. the young man went into the , next room and swallowed the acid. Medical help was immediately called : and the boy’s life was saved. TRAIN ROBBER ON WAY TO PRISON, LEAPS FROM CAR CHARLOTTE, N. C., April 12.— Henry Grady Webb, sentenced in West Virginia to a term of twenty live years in the penitentiary for train robbery, escaped from his guards here while being taken to the federal prison in Atlanta. While the train was standing in the shed at the pas- , senger station Webb jumped through 1 a window. Webb was arrested at the Electric .Medical College in Kansas City, Mo.
