1917 INCOME FROM SEALS TO BE $750,000 The probable income of the govern ment from the seal herd in the fiscal year ending June 20 next will be up ward of $750,000, according to Hugh H. Smith. United States fish commis sioner, and it will increase steadily thereafter. It is the belief of Smith that the time is coming when the gov ernment will derive a net income of a million dollars a year from the herd without any impairment of it. In addition, there is the income from foxes in Alaska, now amounting to about $60,000 a year. From seals and foxes the government is now mak ing two or three times as much as is appropriated by congress for the Alaska work of the department of commerce. The total number of seals estimat ed to be in the herd in 1015. when an official count was made, was 368, 872, as compared with 204.687 in 1014. 268,305 in 1013 and 215.738 in 1012. The number in 1016 was 417.320. In 1012 0.228 pups of the season were branded on the Pribilof islands. Subsequent observations made on these branded animals have been pro ductive of valuable information in re gard to the natural history and growth of seals. Some of these ani mals were observed in 1013 when they were noted in large numbers. The number that returned in 1915 was so large in comparison with th© total number of seals under observation, as to indicate a lower mortality in the first three years of a seal’s life than had ordinarily been assumed. The plan of marketing the seal skins in this country, instead of send ing them abroad, has been a marked success, according to government ex perts, who point out that a reliable market now exists at St. Louis which is well supported. This home market idea was first given definite impulse in 1915. Seal and fox skins are now dressed and dyed in St. Louis and the annual sales are attended by many home buyers.
