These groups work openly while the Nathan Hale Volun teers never betrav their identity. * % --Q CONG RESSIONA L GYMNASTICS Country publishers are told in one breath they should give their advertising space free to the government be cause the government has been carrying newspapers through the mails at a loss. In another breath they are told the second class mail rate must be raised because the newspaper publishers ought to stand their share of the expense of the war. It behooves the owners of country newspapers in the public interest to remember the men whose warped analytical reasoning not only makes the districts from which they spring a laughingstock, but shows how much the country is at the mercy of half baked masoning.—(American Press.) FRONTIER TROOPS Attention of the members of Seward’s military unit was drawn by Senator John Ronan the other evening to the fact that Alaska has already voted $110,000 for war purposes to be expended as the governor may direct. The first $10,000 was voted for the purpose of aiding military units, and may be drawn on under proper pro cedure. The legislature did not specify how the greater amount shall be used and Senator Ronan is of the opinion that it may be used to arm and equip Alaska soldiers. To this end it has been suggested that Alaskan mili tary units should, after receiving instruction in infantry tactics, be drilled along special lines. These units are com prised of men skilled as frontiersmen, who would be per fectly at home in the transport service, or as miners and sappers, while many can qualify as sharpshooters at once. Alaska could produce a regiment to reinforce the allies in the Alps or Vosges mountains whose members would be veterans in all but sendee under fire. -A Fly destruction is its own reward. A walk in the open is worth two in the house. —-« Nothing would be so calculated to give the kaiser a chill as to get in the way of an American draft. ————— --■-— - ■ ■ ■ Friends of Count Bernstorff who expected him to be THE LIGHTNING CHANGE. •AV — Bronstrup in San Francisco Chronicle highly influential at home will be disappointed to find him located off at Sweden. --•> The Hindenburg line is turning around and pointing lo ward the Rhine. !
