A UNITED FRONT
To people of a republic who enjoy freedom unheard
of in an absolute monarchy during times of peace, the
heel of war presses unusually hard, but so far the only!
protests noted come from the type who hunt trouble or
yell before they are hurt.
The rank and file, from whom the fighting men of the |
coming armies will be taken, the young men who are to be j
trained as officers, are taking up their burdens as a nec
essary task, something which must be done to rid the
world of a plague, unpleasant but unavoidable, therefore
something to be tackled quickly that it may be the sooner
ended.
Roars of protest from some whose incomes are over
<40,000 per year against the twenty-five per cent increase
in income tax are a sure sign of lack of thought. What
greater tribute to a man than to recognize his ability by
allowing him to contribute to the public funds according
to his attainments. It is good to note that thousands of
the substantial men of finance gladly contribute.
He is also a patriot who can say, “Behold, I have earn
ed this year sufficient for thy own needs and enough more
to equip a regiment that the glory of my country be up
held and a curse removed front the face of the earth."
In comparison with records of other wars in which
this country has engaged it is apparent that we are pre
senting the most united front in the nation’s history.
FISH
Fishing is the theme of the hour, day and week in
Alaskan coast towns right now. The tremendous demand
for food products has awakened all to the value of the
“pay streak” outside and within the harbor gates.
It is the widest pay streak in the north and there is a
chance for all. Down in Juneau they are building fish
ing boats and so much interest has been aroused that fish
ing occupies more space in the papers than mining. Over ■
at Cordova they don’t say much but there are nearly as
many canneries as there are blocks in the town.
New canneries, salteries, herring curing, cod fishing
shark, beluga, salmon, sable fish, bait, boats, nets, big
catches and kindred tilings are pioductive of continual
conversation and doubie shifts.

THE MINES OF THE SEA
If placer miners had not come to Alaska the quartz
and other resources would never have been discovered. It
will be the same way with the sea. It is only a compara
tively few years since there were no fishermen in Alaskan
waters. Like the placer miners the first fishermen con
fined their attentions to one product—salmon and halibut.
But once get men engaged in any country or in any ele
ment and that country or element will produce something
new. Tlace population on an apparently barren isiard
and the barrenness will become fertile. Just now experi
ments are being made for manufacturing leather out of
the hides of “sharks” found in Alaska waters. A man was
here the other day and is going west to offer a dollar
apiece for hair seal skins which make a splendid leather.
At Cook inlet a company has just been formed to catch
Beluga whales. Near Nome Beluga whales have been
caught and used for some years. In the waters around
us are many varieties of fish which can be used and which
will one day be taken from here to the outside markets.
The thing is to begin and to get the fishermen around.
Even clam diggers out west now make eight and ten dol
lars a day each.—(Juneau Dispatch.)

Were half the power that fills the world with terror,
Were half the wealth bestowed on camps and courts,
Given to redeem the human mind from error,
There were no need of arsenals or forts.
