CHAMBER WELL PLEASED WITH PROGRESS MADE i i — - An enthusiastic meeting of the Sew ard Chamber of Commerce was neld Saturday evening at which the work # f the executive committee was reviewed by Secretary Mooers for the benefit of those who, although subscribing liberally to the chamber’s endeavors, had not been in touch with recent ac tivities. General satisfaction was ex pressed as to the good work accomp lished and the executive committee was urged to continue its efforts. By unanimous vote the chamber de cided to hold a meeting on the second and fourth Monday evenings of each month, the next meeting to be held June 25. 15 RECRUITS WENT OUT ON CROOK Among those who went out on the l’. S. A. T. Crook which left here a couple of day ago, were fifteen re i emits for military service. Two were entrants for the aviation service, nine were en route to Fort Lawton for army service and three to Bremerton to enter the navy. A. K. Muir is registered in town from Mile 9 and will remain indefi nitely. -«y “Pistol Pete” Anderson was in town today from his saltery across* the bay. Pete does not expect to sell his fish to the local cannery, hut will continue to salt them down. He ex pects to get $20 per barrel this year. _•> --——— Social Chat About twenty-five couples attended the dance at the saw mill Saturday night and all report it was an unusual ly pleasant and successful party. Miss A. E. McBride and James Coll were united in marriage this morning at S:.°>0 o’clock at the Nuptial mass, Father Vanderpol officiating. The i bride is a native of San Francisco and has been in Seward only a few days, i Mr. Coll belongs to the Alaskan Engi neering Commission of the Talkedna district. Mr. and Mrs. Coll will spend a week at Kenai lake and then leave for Talkeetna where Coll will resume his fonner position. The Unity club gave a reception this' afternoon at the parish hall in honor of Mr. and Mrs. James Coll, who were married this morning at the Catholic church. —— There will be a special meeting of the first aid unit tomorrow afternoon at .*■» o’clock in Pioneer hall. This meet ing is relating to the Fourth of July entertainment and it is necessary that all members be present. A large party of young folks took! advantage of the fine weather yes terday and climbed up Marathon i mountain as far as the falls. A “most glorious time” was reported by the entire crowd, consisting of Miss Robb, Miss Elizabeth Romig, Miss Cornelia Cooper, Miss Stites, Miss Leslie, Mr. and Mrs. Harr, Messrs. Urbach, Kim mel, Robert Romig, Stites and H. B. Stites. Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Sauers, Jack Sauers, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Ballaine and Miss Florence Ballaine spent the week end at their bungalow at Wood row. Their guests for Sunday includ ed Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Weir and Mr. j and Mrs. Erich Lucas. «3» Mrs. Henry Fathers has returned j to Seward after a visit of several months in the States. -+ The steamer Georgia arrived at Petersburg recently with a couple of wrecking scows in tow, on her way to Kake where another attempt will be made to float the freighter North land, which sank off the Kake can nery wharf last summer. SEWARD SNAPSHOTS __ ___- — — — — - - — — — — — -1 A. A. Hein arrived yesterday after a stay of several weeks out the line. The meeting of the fire department called recently by the fire chief will1 take place this evening at the city hall. Several children have established miniature acquariums for minnows caught at the head of the bay. The road from here to Woodrow and Hear creek was thick with autos speed ing back and forth with excursion parties yesterday. Mary McConnell entertained several of her school chums Saturday night at the Manthey home in Hay View ad dition. A. N. Lindsay, special agent tor the California Insurance company, will leave on the Alameda after spending a few days in Seward in the interests of his company. v ■— Hear hunting was the main recrea tion yesterday, but some spy must have tipped off the bears for there were none to be found. The hunting, however, was engaged in. 11 *€r A slight earthquake occurred last night at 9:46 o’clock and although it happened when practically everybody was awake it was only noticed by a few people. i — Billie Smith writes from Tom Towle’s place on the lower Kenai that he has already bagged five bears along the Russian river district, and is leav ing for Russian lake where he has hopes of getting more. He says the trout have not yet started to bite in any quantity, hut expects that in about two weeks’ time fishing will be good. Judge Green came to town this morning with a radish specimen from his garden and issued an ultimatum to all farmers and gardeners in this vicinity. He defies any one, and with no color or race qualifications, to pro duce a radish that will compare in any way with the product from his place at this date. The judge is very modest about his gardening ability, but thinks that he could spare the time to give Burr, Hoffman, Nash, Hewitt and any others interested in truck gardening a few lessons if they so desired.
