RAILROAD RECORD ^ 0I | All the news of the line front Seward to Fairbanks* No. 51 EXPERIMENTAL EARM STARTED That the Matanuska section is to become one of the greatest farming sections of Alaska, is the assertion of Dr. C. C. Georgeson, head of the Alaska Experimental Hureau. “There are hundreds and hundreds of homesteaders in the valley and all of the available surveyed land has been taken up,” Dr. Georgeson said. “The great drawback is the lack of roads. The land is rolling and the soil is as good on top of the hills as in the valleys, but the farmers are forced at the present time to build their own roads ami that is so ex pensive that it is prohibitive. “That valley will make a wonder ful community, but it will bo absolute ly necessary for the farmers to have roadways before they can develop the country.” The experimental farm is located on a tract of 880 acres near Matanuska Junction and .”8 miles from Anchor age. Dr. Georgeson arranged for the necessary lumber for the erection of buildings and for the clearing of the land. “The land is heavily timbered and the soil is a silt loam which is very rich,” continued Dr. Georgeson. -* If your sweet tooth is your wisdom tooth you will buy your candy at the Key. tf -$ City Express meets all boats and trains. Two other contractors will complete their sections within a week ending June 16th. KarginolT & Co and Lanoflf & Co., grading contractors, have established camps on their work, between Camp 187 and Camp 195 . Eli Barich & Co., who recently completed a contract on the Manatuska Branch, have been awarded a contract for grading be tween the Kashwitna and Sheep Creek. The balance of the work north of the Kashwitna will be cov ered by stationmen within ten days, since it is now possible to land supplies by boat at Camp 201. Piledriver crew Xo. 1 was engaged in driving the last structure on Resi dency No. 9 at the close of the week. After this work has been completed the crew will move ahead to the struc ture at Station X-6624. Piledriver crew No. 2 will be estab lished at Sheep Creek immediately upon its arrival by boat from Anchor age. High water in the Matanuska River washed out a part of the wagon road just north of King during the week, making the hauling of freight imprac ticable. A force of laborers was im mediately set to work repairing the damage. -A Episcopal C hurch Services Services Sunday, July 8th, the Oth Sunday after Trinity. Holy Communion and sermon at 11 A. M. The B. & B. boats No. 1 and 3, which are handling the traffic from Kroto to points beyond, are doing ex cellent work carrying not only Com mission, but privately-owned freight.
