2:’,— (Correspondence of The Associ

in France today than was ever don
on the Panama canal, stupendous a

all the river and harbor work of tlv
Cnii d Stat s. This comparision give
M>me idea of the gigantic operation
vor undertaken at home.
'The Panama construction force wu
40,000 men; here it is a good si'/eo
army in itself. It includes engine*’
troop • and laborers of all kinds *•>>
the • instructive work, and forester
lor furnishing the material of con
stitution, cutting down forests, run
ning sawmills, supplying timber and
lumber.
The call for material is so tremen
dous that the forestry force will hav<
to b increased before long. AI read:
it is running seventy sawmills, am
200 more are required to keep up wit!
the construction. With this increase
the engineering force engaged on con
struction will reach more than twin
as many as wen* employed on the Par
-ama canal, the largest previous con
structive work the United States evei
undertook.
Traveling across r ranee Ironi tin
seacoast, one sees the magnitude of
thi* Arm rican constructive work .•
every hand, from the ten miles ol new
dock.- and piers at the ports, then th
American railway, telegraph and tele
phono lines, vast areas of wan houses
shops and factories, and finally tin
great stretches of military camps am
barracks for this army of over a mill
ion American troops. But while on«
sees this work in immense d'‘.ae'
parts, it is only at army headquarter
that details are available on the mag
nit’»de of the work as a whole.
On the one item of timber and lutn
her for this construction, the army ?o
-estefs are called on to furnish nearlv
500 million board feet of timber of
1 which about -100 million feet is sawed
lumb**r. This 500 million feet is no
rough guess work, but is the estimate
of iTquirments carefully worked ou1
by the engineers. The precise total ol
these estimates is 484,702 feet, or ov
or 0f>,000 miles of lumber.
Th! < lumber' is required to build
docks, barracks, for trench timbering,
railway construction, building barges
warehouses, hospitals, railway cars,
and for telegraph and telephone poles.
This with the provision for firewood
makes the huge total of nearly 500
million feet which the engineering
foresters must supply for this con
structive work. It is this w'hich will
