At the same time he wired his brother, telling nitn of l he death and requesting that he go home to his mother at once and break i the lieu s to her. ? barb-- II DeWitt was a pioneer of this city, having arrived here early in I the rush to the Klondike with a large auiulter of mule- and horses, lie en ?agi<d iii the packing business until the coniplet ion of the railroad and was al ways one of the largest and most sucoi s^ful packets, on the old Skliw wa trail. B, Newell Is Encourag ed By Outlook for the Great North, Big Tourist Travel Coming This will be one of |he best year* the Northern country has ever seen, if the observations of General Manager A. B. Newell, of the White ? Pass, count for anything. Mr. Newell 1# in Skagway. after an alwcnce of six months. During that time he visited his old home in Chicago, and New York, Washington. Ottawa, Montreal and Other Eastern I |N)itits. Ho at one time thought of go lug to London, hut could not do so ou account of a lack of time. In speaking of the outlook for the season of IWCi, Mr. Newell said: '?We are looking for a good year's business for the North. I think it w ill be, at least, as good for the railroad company as it wa* last year. There is a larger quantity of freight in sight at this time than was in sight at this time last year. The shipments of machinery will, I think. Ik> heavier this year than they were last year. Then the Tanana is attracting a great deal of attention and will bring many passengers through Skagwuy, a* well as hundreds of tons of freight. "Much of the gmids that are going in early will Is- taken do#n to Lower La 1 Harge over the ice and from there ! >hlpped down stream on scows, before the. .boat* begin to make trips from | Whituhorse. 4 "I confidently expect a much larger tourist travel this year than ever be fore. I understand that the Spokane has Hold all her accommodations for the summer already, and that other com panies are making bookings. Another feature of this tourist travel this year that will he favorable, from an Alaskan standpoint, in the numltcr who will re main over at Skagway and make tri|N into the interior to Atlin or Dawson or Ixith. "The growth and development of the Atlin country is going to have a great deal to do in keeping up the business of the North." Mr. New ell goes to VVhitehorse today for a few days. He will go over the line and look into things carefully, after w hich he will return to Vancouver and come up for the season later in the spring. Mr. Newell says it i? the intentiou of the railroad company to improve the line between Skag way and Whitehorse this summer. Among the first things that will be Ixgun will lie the two steel bridges that are to In* built U-tween (?lacier and the tunnel. These will l>e constructed by the l'uget Sound Hrldge A Dredging Company. This is the same concern that built the big steel bridge at the switchback. B?T*rldK? Namei Th? The Western ond Northern trip planned by ihe American institute of Mining Engineers has been cancelled for the reason that it was found impos sible to secure stitable tran*i>ortation accommodations. The engineers want ed to get a special train of a dozen or more cars, but the Kastern roads are >o crowded with work that the equip ment coit Id not be spared. Such was the information conveyed by wire to General Manager Newell at Vancouv ? r jii-t before his departure for Skagway. i Mr. Newell says the trip had been planned carefully, particularly as to | traiis|iortation from Vancouver to Skagwa) and from this place into Daw* -on. All arrangements had been com pleted to handle the excursion com fortable and expeditiously to Dawson and return. Nlr. Newell says the G.
