Cottage Gets a Bid 8rorch
iug From Flames
Kire uearly gutted the old Lewis res
idence on the alloy between Slate and
Main streets and Second anil Third av
enues yesterday afternoon. The flames
must have started from sparks from the
steam wood sawing machine running
on the vacant lot across the alley.
They were first discovered by the sen
tinel at the Sylvester block shooting
up from the rear of the cottage. He
gave the signal and the fire bell soon
itft^r gave the general alarm. The
two hose companies and the hook and
ladder comftanv responded, and in a
few minutes put the flames out.
The cottage was formerly occupied
by Messrs. Zinkam and McLeod, but
for two weeks the building has been
vacant. The loss is estimated at about
?!??.
