A Washington dispatch says: The Lucey bill, pused by the house, creat ing the Petrified Forest National Park, is based upon a report submitted by Mr. Lucey from the committee op public lands. The forestdiscribed em braces townships sixteen and seven teen north, ranges "twenty-three and twenty-four east, Gila and Salt river base and meridian. According to the bill the park shall be under the exclu tve control of the Secretary of the Interior, and cure will be taken to pre vent. Injury or spoliation of mineral ized or fossilized formations and de posits, natural curiosities uml wonders jvithln the park. 7 The Secretary of the interior is au thorized to rent or lease pieces of ground for the erection of buildings to accommodate visitors, and all funds arising from privileges granted by congress shall be covered Into the United States treasury us a special fund, to be expended in the care of the park. The bill attaches severe pen alties in case of persons unlawfully in truding upon he park or without per mission appropriating or injuring min eralized or fossilized formations and for violating oilier regulations. In his report Mr. Lucey lends in a le-criplion of the petrified forest us follows: "This tractof lund Is unsuit able for cultivation and has no value outside of its scenic beauty and fossil curiosities. The people of Arizona desire that it should hus be set apart. The wanton destruction by the use of powder and dynumite will continue until the region is protected by law. .. Heckless men destroy these great curl- oslties with explosives In search for the beautiful crystals from the interior of the trunks of the trees. "It would seem that all that would be necessary would be to call the atten tion of the American congress to this remarkable region in order to secure its preservation to our posterity." Concluding, the report says: "One of the most remarkable of the natural curiosities of the American continent is known as the petrified forest, or chalcedony forest, of Arizona. This region bus not been extensively vis ited by the American public. When properly cared for and supplied with suitable accommodations for visitors it will take its place with the Yellow stone, Yoemite and Mount Ranier na tional parks.
