THE QUEEN'S WILL.
MEETS LADY CUNARD.
Has Been Opened But Will Nerer

DUpoaUloB of Her Intiaenae Estate

Prlacesa Beatrice Will Be
I'rlnclpal Beaeflelarjr.
Queen Victoria's will has been opened
'nnd examined by the duly 'constituted
authorities, but nothing will ever be
made public officiary as to the provi
sions of the instrument or the amount
of her private fortune.
It is known that the queen made a
will early in her reign, which was re
pcatidly n'.tered and added to as chil
dren and rrnmlcliildrcn were born, and
as her estates rapidly adanced in
value. Tliis proceeded until ISflG, when
her majebty decided to have an entirely
new document drawn, and with great
personal enre this was accompli.' lud.
Those In a position to make any tart
of a guess ns to the provisions of the
queen's will declare thntl'rinctis Iteat
rice, widow of Prince Henry of Ilatten
herg, will be the principal beneficiary.
She is the govcrnorof the Isle of Wight,
and will probably inherit Osborne
house and the whole estate surround
ing it. Then the duke of Connaught,
and his sons, who have been great fa
vorites with Victoria, will receive a
large portion of the fortune. The duke
will probably become the owner of Bal
moral and the Scottish property.
The grandchildren who are expected
to receive the largest bequests are the
two children of Victoria's youngest son,
the former duke of Albany.
The queen's second daughter,
Princess Christian of Schleswig-Ho".-steln,
is not rich, nnd It is expected that
she and, her four children will be liber
ally provided for.
Edward VII., who will be amply pro
vided for by the country, nnd the duke
of, York, who comes into the duchy of
Cornwall, and will be the prince of
Wales, will probably not be sharers in
the late queen's private fortune.
New York Policeman Cornea to Grief
Before the Owner of S-teasn-
fcoat Line.
' Lady Bache Cunard, of London, h as
had her first experience with a New
York policeman and she did not come
out second best. The policeman ex
plains it by saying tnere never would
have been any trouble if he had
known anything about it before and
he hopes he will be able to keep his
detail to the pier. Lady Cunard went
down to the Cunard Line pier to meet
her husband nnd little daughter, who
were passengers on the Umbria, just
arriving. As the vessel was being
warped into the dock she pressed for
ward eagerly and the act caught the
eye of an elderly policeman.
"Ye'll have to get back,-" he shout
ed at her, but her ladyship simply
drew herself together and stared
haughtily at him. He approached
and the noblewoman became more
haughty.
"Fellow," she said freezingly, "what
do you mean by such impertinence?"
"Impertinence, is it?" was the an
swer. "Move back, nowl Don't be
trjing to bluff."
"I shall take your number, officer.
I am.Lady Bache Cunard."
"Ho! Ho! Ho. Lady Cunard
own the Cunard line, I suppose? Move
back!"
Just then a high official of the line
approached, doffed his hat and bowed.
The policeman shivered and his eyes
began to project.
"Is it Lady Cunard?" he whispered,
in an awe-struck voice.
"Sure," was the cold answer.
"Do she really own the Cunard
line?"
"Most of it," was the answer.
"Will you kindly take me to the end
of the pier and kick me overboard?"
For the rest of the stay there he
guarded her ladyship so zealously that
when a man turned around to stare at
1.1m he threatened to hit him with his
stick 'and arrest him for disorderly
conduct.

Dr. E. D. Salmon, chief of the bureau
of animal industry of the agricultural
department, reviewed before, the in
dustrial commission the work of the de
partment in controlling contagious dis
eases of animals in the United States
and the prevention of importation or
exportation of contagion. To prevent
this- importation he said that quaran

along the Atlantic coast at New York,
Boston nnd Baltimore and along the
Mexican and Canadian borders. In
spectors, he said, recently have sent to
Great Britain and Canada to make tu

may be rejected before shipment. He
pointed out that meat inspection has
been established nt the principal pack

San Praaelseo Knla-hta Templara Ask
President MeKlnley to Meet
with Them.
Capt A. J. Humphrey visited the ex
ecutive mansion, Washington, the other
day as the special envoy of California
commandery No. 1, Knights Templars
of Sun Francisco to personally present
to President McKInley an invitation
from the commandery to meet with it
upon his visit to the Pacific coast the
coming spring.
The card of invitation which he hand
ed to Sir Knight McKInley rivals in
splendor anything of the kind that was
ever presented to a president. It is a
solid gold plate 3, by S'2 inche and
about one-eighth of an inch in thick
ness. In the upper right-hand corner
is an enameled maltese cross, with the
usual insignia of the order, having in
the center a diamond of about one carat
weight. The "card" is beautifully en
graved. SWEATS BLOOD UNTIL DEATH!

I'rlnceea Royal.
The title of princess royal, borne by
the Empress Frederick of Germany
before her marriage, .s not given to
the eldest daughter of English sover
eigns, but only to the first child
should it happen to be a girl.
Mary Clair, aged five years, died at
Williamsport, Pa., the other day under
peculiar circumstances. During the
past two weeks the child has been suf
fering with eczema, which developed
into hemorrhage of the skin virtual
ly sweating blood.
In the usual cases of eczema the pa
tient weeps a watery substance from
the skin nnd seldom does death occur.
In this case the weeping was of blood.
The little one b'.cd for an hour and a
half nnd then became so exhausted
that dissolution occurred. The attend
ing physicians say the case is a
rarity and no reference can be found
to it in the medical books.
